Harare, 2 May 2025 – The 2025 Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association (ZUSA) Cluster 1 Games burst into life yesterday at the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT), marking the start of a thrilling three-day celebration of talent, teamwork, and the unwavering pursuit of drug-free sporting excellence.
Under the bold theme “University Sport: Developing Drug-Free Champions!”, the prestigious tournament has drawn over 1,000 elite student-athletes from 16 universities across Zimbabwe.
From the lightning-fast sprints of athletics to the strategic battles of chess, competitors will vie for glory in football, cricket, table tennis, Paralympics, and more until the closing ceremony on 3 May.
The opening ceremony was a dazzling spectacle of colour, energy, and inspiration, graced by ZUSA Patron and Midlands State University Vice Chancellor, Professor V.N. Muzvidziwa, as Guest of Honour.
Addressing a packed arena of athletes, officials, and supporters, he delivered a powerful message on the transformative power of sport.
“Sport is something that unites in the midst of diversity,” declared Professor Muzvidziwa.
He added, “In the midst of many challenges, we can find sport as a uniting factor.
“It is a very important fundamental principle that as we gather today to celebrate the vibrant spirit of university sport, we underscore our unwavering commitment to developing drug-free sport, drug-free champions, fair play, and fair competition.”
His words resonated deeply, reinforcing the Games’ critical role in combating drug and substance abuse among youth—a key pillar of Zimbabwe’s Education 5.0 philosophy, which champions innovation, industrialisation, and holistic student development.
In a stirring moment, athletes and officials took a solemn oath, vowing to uphold the highest standards of integrity and sportsmanship.
The parade of teams—each proudly donning their university colours—transformed the arena into a sea of vibrant banners and infectious energy, setting the stage for fierce but friendly rivalries.
Beyond the medals and accolades, the ZUSA Games stand as a beacon of hope and ambition.
Fostering teamwork, discipline, and clean competition, the event not only nurtures future champions but also cultivates potential international stars who could one day represent Zimbabwe on the global stage.
