Ms. Evernice S. Chikukwa, a first-year PhD student in the Department of Chemical Science, recently completed a three-month research visit at the University of Cambridge, one of the world’s leading universities. The visit was made possible through the Cambridge–Alborada Research Fund, under the supervision of Professor G. Mehlana from MSU and hosted by Professor Andrew Wheatley from the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry at Cambridge.

During her stay, Ms. Chikukwa joined the Wheatley Research Group, where she was warmly welcomed and integrated into the team’s ongoing projects. Her research focused on the synthesis of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), specifically UiO-66, and the encapsulation of CdSe quantum dots using solvothermal and microwave-assisted techniques. This work contributed directly to her doctoral studies which involves the synthesis of MOF-based monolithic systems for a variety of applications including drug delivery.

Ms. Chikukwa also received comprehensive training on advanced characterization techniques, including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD). She expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with these sophisticated instruments, which provided her with an in-depth understanding of materials analysis.

Reflecting on her experience, Ms. Chikukwa noted that being exposed to state-of-the-art laboratories and world-class research practices broadened her perspective and inspired her to explore ways of improving research capacity in developing countries. She also highlighted how the visit fostered teamwork, collaboration, and cultural exchange, demonstrating that individuals from diverse backgrounds can unite to achieve common scientific goals.

Ms. Chikukwa extended her heartfelt appreciation to the Cambridge–Alborada Fund for funding the visit, to Professor Mehlana for his mentorship and guidance, and to Professor Wheatley and the Wheatley Group for their warm hospitality and support.

Her visit stands as a shining example of the power of international collaboration in advancing scientific knowledge and building research capacity across institutions.
