{"id":51,"date":"2018-05-09T09:37:21","date_gmt":"2018-05-09T09:37:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ww5.msu.ac.zw\/gsbl\/programmes\/emba\/"},"modified":"2020-05-06T11:12:09","modified_gmt":"2020-05-06T11:12:09","slug":"emba","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ww5.msu.ac.zw\/gsbl\/programmes\/emba\/","title":{"rendered":"Executive Masters In Business Administration (EMBA)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>INTRODUCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These Regulations should be read in conjunction with the General Regulations for Postgraduate Studies, hereinafter referred to as the General Postgraduate Regulations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit; font-weight: 600;\">DEFINITION OF TERMS&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Faculty Post Graduate Studies Committee \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Means the Committee comprising the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce (who shall be the Chairperson) the GSBL Director. All Chairpersons in the Faculty of Commerce, all MBA Lecturers and the External Examiners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the definition of Special Examinations, Programme, Level, Semester, Module, Project, Continuous Assessment, Retake, Carryover, Repeat, Withdraw, Aegrotat, Credit, Dissertation refer to Section 1.9 of the General Post Graduate Regulations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>ENTRY REQUIREMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be eligible for admission to the EMBA Programme, a candidate must normally:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be at least 35 years of age.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Be an Executive of their own business or has been a manager for at least ten (10) years,<\/li>\n<li>Be a holder of at least a second-class degree or its equivalent awarded by Midlands State University or any other recognized institution.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be a holder of a third class degree or its equivalent and may be admitted only after<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> providing evidence of academic maturity in the field of study as shall be judged by <\/span>Faculty Post Graduate Studies Committee.<\/li>\n<li>Hold at least a diploma from a recognised institution in a recognised area of study<\/li>\n<li>Be required to provide two references from reputable people certifying their ability and suitability to undertake the programme successfully.<\/li>\n<li>Undergo an interviewing process that shall be concluded by the Faculty Post Graduate Studies Committee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>GENERAL PROVISIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EMBA Programme shall normally be studied over a minimum period of two academic levels, on a full time block release basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There shall be three, one week Block Sessions per semester and each module shall be taught for a total of 36 contact hours except for elective modules which shall be taught for at least 24 contact hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dissertations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each candidate is required to submit a dissertation of approximately 20 000 words on a topic relating to his\/her area of managerial interest and approved in writing by the dissertation supervisor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candidates shall be required to submit three hard bound copies of dissertation, one of which shall be deposited in the University Library, the other shall be submitted to the GSBL Office and the last copy should be returned to the student.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The format for the dissertation shall be provided by the GSBL Office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fees for the EMBA programme shall be determined by the University Fees Revision Committee from time to time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fees shall be paid per semester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>ASSESSMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evaluation of students shall normally be based on continuous assessment as well as formal examinations that are held at the end of each semester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continuous Assessment shall account for 40% of the overall assessment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Final examination shall account for 60% of the overall assessment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Items that should constitute the continuous assessment, and the weighting attached to each item, shall depend on the module in question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the exception of dissertation, sessional examination shall be conducted in all modules.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be admitted for examinations, a candidate must:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be a registered student of the University in accordance with the General Postgraduate Regulations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Have satisfactorily attended and completed the approved modules of study. Satisfactory completion of modules shall require submission of all written assignments and tests and any other work that constitutes the continuous assessment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PROVISIONS FOR PROGRESSION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Faculty Post graduate Studies Board of Examiners shall meet at the end of each semester to ratify the marks obtained by candidates.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A student shall progress automatically from one level to the other even carrying the modules from the previous level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>FAILURE TO SATISFY THE EXAMINERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in terms of the Excutive Masters in Business Administration Regulations, read in conjunction with the General Post Graduate Regulations, may be required to; Retake module(s) failed in a previous semester&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Retake<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students may, subject to the approval of the senate, be allowed to redo module(s) that they would have failed in the previous semester<\/span><\/p>\n<p>REMARKING OF EXAMINATIONS<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No requests for remarks of examinations shall be entertained unless Senate directs such requests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a student who has been given a withdraw decision may appeal against such a decision to the Registrar, in writing, within 21 days after the publication of Examination results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>MODULES CLASSIFICATION<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students\u2019 performance in modules for the EMBA programme shall be classified as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80%+<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Class<\/span><\/li>\n<li>70%-79% <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.1<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Class (Upper)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>60%-69% <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.2<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Class (Lower)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>50%-59% <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pass<\/span><\/li>\n<li>0%-49% <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fail<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>DEGREE CLASSIFICATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EMBA degree shall be classified as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80%-100%<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pass with Distinction<\/span><\/li>\n<li>70%-79% <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pass with Merit<\/span><\/li>\n<li>50%-69% <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pass<\/span><\/li>\n<li>0%- 49% <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fail<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>DEGREE WEIGHING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the overall degree classification, all Levels shall be equally weighted as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Level One<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50%<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Level Two <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PROGRAMME STRUCTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Level 1 Semester 1<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Code<\/b> <b>Module Description<\/b> <b>&nbsp; 3<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>N.B At least ten (10) students will constitute a class for elective modules.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The electives will be offered subject to the availability of expertise.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>MODULE SYNOSPES<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>EMBA 701 Financial Accounting<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The module deals with accounting principles and conventions. It will attempt to develop<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accounting skills and enhance appreciation of accounting related information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main topics include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Record keeping and double entry, the preparation of the profit and loss account and balance <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sheet, profit measurement, valuation of assets, company accounts, legal and regulatory <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">framework, international accounting standards, some&nbsp; aspects of auditing, some aspects of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taxation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>EMBA 702 Management Information Systems<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concepts of systems and organisation, strategic uses of information technology computer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">system resources (computer, hardware, computer software, file and data base management <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">systems). The internet and office communication, applications of information systems to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">functional business areas, tactical and strategic information systems to business applications, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decision support and expert systems, planning and the development of information systems, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">management of information systems and end user computing, security and ethical issues of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">information systems.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>EMBA 703 The Economic Environment<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The module analyses the economic fundamentals that drive the behaviour of the macro<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">economy. It seeks to explain the behaviour of key macroeconomic variables such as output,&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employment and inflation. It also analyses the environment in which the macroeconomic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">policy in Zimbabwe is conducted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>EMBA 704 Organisational Behaviour<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The module analysis the level of organisational behaviour and their management.&nbsp; It looks at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the individual, the group and the organization. It looks at the concept of power and how it is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">managed in organisations.&nbsp; It also looks at<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> human resources administration, models relating <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to human productivity, satisfaction, retention and the earning structure in the organisation<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also analysis organisational structures, leadership styles and organisational politics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>EMBA 706 Human Resource Management<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern societies require that production, distribution, and exchange be organised in large a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd complex organisations. One of the key problems of these organisations is the utilization o<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f \u201clabour resources\u201d to provide the productive effort needed to achieve the goals of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organisation. In reality, an organisation only exists through its people and cannot achieve <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">success without their effort, commitment and loyalty. It is, therefore, the overall task of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human Resource Management to develop strategies, policies and procedures that will f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acilitate employee effort, commitment and loyalty. The study of Human Resource<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Management seeks to achieve the following objectives;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To provide students with a thorough grounding in the key areas of human resource management<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To explain the basic concepts underpinning the study and practice of human resource <\/span>management<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To provide a critical analysis of the practicality and effectiveness of the human resource management approach for any organisation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To compare and contrast the philosophy of human resource management with earlier perspectives on people management.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To discriminate between the rhetoric and reality of human resource management.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>E<\/b><b>MBA 707 Financial Management<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The module is intended to offer the participants the principles and major analytical a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pproaches that are applied in financial management to facilitate decision-making. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The module should facilitate the formulation, implementation and evaluation of financial management practices or strategies by businesses within their environments that are dynamic.&nbsp; Having studied the course, students should be equipped with decision-making skills that should enable them to perform completely in an ever-changing business environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>EMBA 708 Marketing Management<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The module aims to equip the student with knowledge of the main concepts and theories of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marketing management so as to enable one to perform adequately in any single functional <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">area within marketing.&nbsp; Topics covered include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marketing concept, Marketing environment, Market segmentation, Marketing planning,<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Consumer and industrial buying strategies, Product life cycle, Promotion: advertising, sales promotion, personal selling sales management and public, Relations, Pricing, Distribution, Service marketing: People, process management and physical evidence. The module will <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">show how academic theory is developed and will provide research training in the individual <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">components of research design, implementation and reporting. The issues that will be factored in include the environment, the constant flux of society and the strategies required for the management of that flux. Main topics include: the role of analysis and planning, mission, objectives, values, ethics and goals. Also analysed will be issues relating to markets, industries, competitors, stakeholders internal capabilities, value chains, resources and portfolios core and generic strategies, structure, culture and organizational design, strategy evaluation, implementation and control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>EMBA802 Entrepreneurship<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This module defines entrepreneurship. It relates to developing a business and translating ideas into achievable business opportunities. The main topics include;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Assessment, preparation for a new venture, security of finance, financial control, developing an effective business plan. It also includes Projects Structuring, Project Finance, Hiring and management of personal control of materials, monitoring of the project, budgeting and project completion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>EMBA806 Investment Analysis and Portfolio Theory<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The module examines the principles of portfolio analysis and management. The focus is on the \u201cinvestors perspective\u201d of financial theory and practice, including risk, returns, the efficient marketing hypothesis and related modules and their application in portfolio management. The conflict arises from the fact that the organization on one seeks to achieve maximum profits at very minimal cost while on the other hand, the employee seeks to achieve maximum reward (pay benefits etc.) at very minimal contribution in terms of his\/her labour. This conflict is not always manifesting. The course also provides an understanding of the processing of Accounting Information and how such information is applied to practical business situations.
