SYMPOSIUM THEME: Development Induced Relocations: Zimbabwean Experiences and Resettlement Policy Options.<\/b><\/p>\n

Millions of people worldwide are displaced or resettled every year, due to development projects, such as the construction of dams, irrigation schemes, urban development, transport, conservation or mining projects. While some of these development projects have made important and significant contributions to human development and the benefits derived from them have been considerable, in too many cases unacceptable and often unnecessary prices have been paid to secure those benefits especially in social and environmental terms by the people displaced. In the worst scenario these development projects have left communities divided. According to the World Commission on Dams (2000) at the heart of the development debate are issues of equity, governance, justice and power. These are issues that underlie many unmanageable problems faced by humanity. It can be concluded therefore that the results of these projects have usually been a mixed bag. Key speakers are expected to address the impact of these development induced relocations on local communities and the nation at large in the implementation and attainment of selected issues as listed below:<\/span><\/p>\n

    SYMPOSIUM OBJECTIVES<\/b><\/h3>\n

    \u00a0<\/b>The specific objectives of the Conference are to:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Provide\u00a0 data and evidence on the impact of development induced relocations on the affected communities and the nation at large<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Enable participants and presenters to reflect on how to incorporate communities in development initiatives.<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. \u00a0Promote the creation of linkages between communities, local and central government, and civil society in order to collectively attend to social and economic challenges.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
