TO
THE TUGWI MUKOSI MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH INSTITUTE (TMMRI) IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CENTRE FOR CONFLICT MANAGEMENT AND TRANSFORMATION (CCMT) ONE DAY SYMPOSIUM
ON
DEVELOPMENT INDUCED RELOCATIONS
DATE: 28 November 2019
VENUE: New Administration Block Boardroom, Zvishavane Campus
SYMPOSIUM THEME: Development Induced Relocations: Zimbabwean Experiences and Resettlement Policy Options.
Millions of people worldwide are displaced or resettled every year, due to development projects, such as the construction of dams, irrigation schemes, urban development, transport, conservation or mining projects. While some of these development projects have made important and significant contributions to human development and the benefits derived from them have been considerable, in too many cases unacceptable and often unnecessary prices have been paid to secure those benefits especially in social and environmental terms by the people displaced. In the worst scenario these development projects have left communities divided. According to the World Commission on Dams (2000) at the heart of the development debate are issues of equity, governance, justice and power. These are issues that underlie many unmanageable problems faced by humanity. It can be concluded therefore that the results of these projects have usually been a mixed bag. Key speakers are expected to address the impact of these development induced relocations on local communities and the nation at large in the implementation and attainment of selected issues as listed below:
- Equity
- Governance,
- Justice and power
- Peace justice and strong institutions
- Gender equality
- Good health and well-being
