Physiology is the study of vital life processes and activities within the living systems. The word comes from the Latin word physiologia and the Greek word phusilogia which refer to the study of nature. The field of physiology is fundamental in the discovery of how living systems operate by integrating the molecules, cells and systems that make up living organisms and their surroundings. The vision of the Department of Physiology is to be an intellectual hub developing critical thinkers in health science research as well as giving Health Sciences students fundamental preparation for the clinical years.Whilst the Faculty of Medicine is still new, the Department exists mainly for pre-clinical training of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree students in first and second years. However, there are plans to also extend the department’s services to the training of other medical disciplines like, Radiology, Nursing Science, Nutrition, Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and others. It is also envisaged that the Department of Physiology will soon have the capacity to train post graduate students in Physiology (MPhil and DPhil).
