1.0 PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAMME
The programme seeks to equip students with educational theory and practical skills that are required for effective teaching and learning in Tertiary and Higher Education.
2.0 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- Normal Entry
A first degree from a recognised university or institution or any other degree recognised by the university.
Teaching/training experience in higher and tertiary education institutions.

PDTE531: Educational Foundations
The module exposes students to the nature, functions, branches and theories of philosophy in education, implications of Philosophical and Sociological Foundations on Education 5.0 doctrine, Historical influences on higher education in Western society; history and importance of the sociology of education to higher education; dominant contemporary theories; nature, theories of learning; student counselling and importance of Psychology to a higher education practitioner.
PDTE532: Student Assessment and Evaluation Technics
The module exposes students to theory, practice and types of student assessment, objectives, student learning outcomes and measurement, Bloom’s, Anderson & Krathwohl’s taxonomies, item writing and analysis, marking guides, e-assessment, analysis and grading tests and examinations, moderation of examination papers,internal and external assessor’s reports, student support, academic integrity and plagiarism, assessing practical work, attachment supervision and the university credit system.
PDTE533: Instructional Technology
The module exposes students to synchronous and asynchronous learning, file management; MS word processing, designing innovative and commercialise teaching/learning content, statistical packages, PowerPoint for instruction, virtual classrooms and laboratories, multimedia, smart classrooms, message boards, Internet for research, social media, designing online questionnaires/surveys, website design, hyperlinks, uploading teaching material; e-marking; online tests, conference lectures; e-learning software.
PDTE534: Curriculum Issues in Tertiary Education
The module introduces students to models, components, elements, types and stakeholders of curricula, Bloom’s, Anderson and Krathwohl’s taxonomies of learning domains, curriculum development: design, planning, implementation, monitoring, assessment and evaluation; module writing; open and distance learning (ODL) packaging; infusing contemporary issues into curriculum design, indicators of a sustainable curriculum; analysis and review; evaluation models.
PDTE535: Administrative Issues in Tertiary Education
The module covers management in higher education covering management structures, formal and informal organisations, theories; principles and functions of management; culture and management; lifelong learning; policy design, the policy cycle; quality management in higher and tertiary education: quality assurance structures, quality enhancement, leadership in educational institutions: styles, theories and evaluation of leadership effectiveness; management, personal attributes, and professional ethics.
PDTE536: Didactics in Tertiary Education
The module introduces teaching/training methods. It also explores the characteristics of an adult learner. The use of technology in teaching and Education 5.0; andragogic principles; the adult learner; improving student throughput; conditions of learning; learning styles; motivation; effective teaching, training, facilitation and learning approaches: active/ interactive methods/approaches and strategies; challenges, reflections on theory and practice.
PDTE537: Teaching Practice in Tertiary Education
The module equips students with innovative skills and strategies of teaching, training and facilitation, E-learning in teaching Microteaching session lecture preparation; layout of presentation; lecture execution and its steps; methods; use of multimedia; application to real life; content mastery; professional aspects: attitude/conduct, dress and appearance, language use, voice projection, time management, rapport; documentation: resource file, course outlines, lecture presentations, lecture evaluations.
PDTE538: Dissertation
The Dissertation is a research study carried out over two semesters by each postgraduate student under the guidance of a supervisor. Students apply their knowledge and skills in conducting research on contemporary educational and social issues in their area of specialisation. Students are encouraged to conduct research, which has the potential to contribute to knowledge and policies in education, and in social issues such as poverty, disaster and risk management, environmental conservation, etc. Students are expected to produce and submit a dissertation that meets the standards of research work at Postgraduate Level.
