Midlands State University marked a significant milestone in its academic journey as 6 479 students received their degrees at the institution’s 25th Graduation Ceremony on 21 November, 2024.
The ceremony, presided over by His Excellency, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Cde. Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa as Chancellor of state universities, took place at the University’s Main Campus in Gweru.
The graduating class reflected MSU’s commitment to gender equality and academic excellence, with women comprising 53% of the graduates.
The ceremony celebrated 1,991 postgraduate achievements, including ten doctorate degrees, highlighting the institution’s growing emphasis on advanced research and scholarship.
A historic moment for the institution was the graduation of its first cohort of medical doctors to physically graduate at the University.
Vice Chancellor Professor Victor Ngonidzashe Muzvidziwa noted, “Allow me to inform you that we have 18 graduands belonging to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
“This is the first cohort to graduate with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at MSU,” remarked Professor Muzvidziwa.
The ceremony showcased significant innovations from the university’s research community, including breakthrough developments in water purification technology.
“One of our young innovators has developed modularized units for chlorine production; by so doing, this innovative mind is tackling one of the most pressing challenges we face; access to clean water,” the Vice Chancellor announced.
Among the distinguished graduates was Her Excellence, Dr. Auxilia Mnangagwa, the First Lady of the Republic of Zimbabwe, who earned her doctorate degree, demonstrating the institution’s appeal to diverse learners at all levels.
Looking toward the future, MSU announced plans for its Silver Jubilee celebration in 2025, marking 25 years since its establishment by an Act of Parliament in 1999.
The Vice Chancellor emphasised the institution’s journey: “Our journey has been remarkable and we are grateful to all those who have passed through this institution, to those who have walked this journey with us, and the communities and corporates who have supported us.”
The graduation ceremony underscored MSU’s position as a leading institution in Zimbabwe’s higher education sector, preparing graduates for meaningful contributions to national development.
