HARARE, Zimbabwe — Midlands State University (MSU) and the Kutsaga Research Station are spearheading research to define the future of Zimbabwe’s emerging cannabis sector.
The institutions hosted a stakeholder engagement meeting on 19 March 2026 at a cannabis field trial site to showcase studies on the genetic diversity of indigenous Cannabis sativa L. strains.
MSU Cannabis Researcher and PhD student Mr. Emmanuel Mhuru led the field tour, demonstrating how different cannabis genotypes perform under local agro-ecological conditions.
The initiative aims to provide the robust scientific data necessary to support regulatory frameworks and enhance Zimbabwe’s competitiveness in international medicinal and industrial markets.
Dr. Rutendo Zishiri, the Coordinator of the MSU Cannabis Centre, said these collaborations position Zimbabwe as a key global player through science-led innovation.
The partnership integrates academic expertise with practical industry application to foster a sustainable and well-regulated domestic industry.
Representatives from government, regulatory authorities, and the broader agricultural sector observed the trial methodologies firsthand to understand growth performance and adaptability.
Kutsaga Research Station’s Head of Sustainable Agricultural Prcatice, Dr Kumbirai Mateva, and Head of Genetics, Biotechnology & Bioinnovation, Mr. Francis Mukoyi, provided technical insights into cannabis genetics and quality parameters.
Participants engaged directly with researchers to discuss practical challenges and future research directions for the crop.
The field day serves as a primary example of how higher learning institutions and research bodies can drive national development priorities.
This collaboration reinforces the role of academia-industry partnerships in building technical capacity and driving innovation within the region.
