GWERU, Zimbabwe – In a strategic move to synchronise regional academic prowess, the Midlands State University (MSU) Research and Innovation Division hosted the University of Zambia’s (UNZA) Directorate of Innovation, Technology Transfer and Commercialisation on 26 March 2026 to evaluate and adapt MSU’s pioneering innovation management systems.
This high-level benchmarking exercise serves as a critical mechanism for higher education institutions to audit their operational frameworks against global best practices.
By fostering this rigorous knowledge exchange, both universities aim to bridge the gap between academic research and tangible economic impact.
The diplomatic engagement commenced within the Vice Chancellor’s boardroom, where Professor M. Maphosa—Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Administration—received the Zambian delegation on behalf of Vice Chancellor Professor V.N. Muzvidziwa.
Advocating for a unified continental vision, Professor L. Chikoko, MSU Executive Director for International and Alumni Relations, framed the visit as a pivot point for regional growth.
“Partnerships such as these are not merely institutional formalities; they are the building blocks for the development of Africa,” Professor Chikoko observed.
The dialogue then shifted toward the necessity of academic integrity in the commercial space, led by Professor G. Mehlana, the Executive Director of MSU’s Research and Innovation Division.
Professor Mehlana emphasised the prerequisite of quality data, noting: “We must ensure that our technology transfer efforts are built upon a bedrock of solid research, transforming knowledge into tangible solutions.”
The technical sessions delved into the complexities of institutional frameworks, intellectual property protocols, and the mechanics of strengthening industry-academic linkages.
Delegates explored a multi-faceted roadmap for the future, including joint research ventures, postgraduate co-supervision, and reciprocal exchange programmes.
Concluding the proceedings, Dr. C. Musarurwa, Acting Deputy Director of the MSU Research and Innovation Division, lauded the synergy between the two teams.
The Acting Deputy Director expressed profound gratitude for the active participation and collaborative spirit displayed throughout the high-stakes deliberations.
This bilateral engagement reinforces MSU’s position as a regional leader in Education 5.0, driving industrialisation as a cornerstone of national and continental development.
