RESEARCH FELLOW/ LANGUAGE RESEARCHER/ RESEARCH ASSISTANT: 2 POSTS: Swahili / Koisan
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following or closely related fields: (Research Assistant)
- Swahili/ Koisan Language and Literature
- Swahili/ Koisan Linguistics
- Applied Linguistics (with a focus on Swahili or Koisan)
- Swahili/ Koisan Studies
- Translation and Interpreting (with Swahili or Koisan)
Master’s Degree in: (Language Researcher)
- Swahili/ Koisan Linguistics
- Applied Linguistics (with focus on Swahili or Koisan)
- Comparative Linguistics
- Translation Studies (Swahili-English or Swahili-Indigenous Languages/ Koisan-English or Koisan-Indigenous Languages).
Language Proficiency:
- The candidates must demonstrate fluency in both spoken and written Swahili or Koisan.
For Research Fellows: A PhD in any of the above areas, especially with a focus on:
- Language Documentation
- Corpus Linguistics
- Language Policy or Planning
- Educational Technology for Language Learning
JOB DESCRIPTION
- A Research Fellow/ Language Researcher/ Research Assistant/ carries out language consultancy and research for a particular language or portfolio in the Institute
- Apart from research and consultancy, a Language Researcher/Research Assistant/Research Fellow is actively involved in the designing of innovative research proposals for submission to granting agencies to secure funds for the Institute.
- A Research Fellow also supervises researchers and research assistants under his/her portfolio.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Carries out language research;
- Engages in language consultancy work in his/her portfolio;
- Recruits clients for tutorials and other language services in his/her area of specialisation;
- A Language Researcher supervises undergraduate research while a Research Fellow additionally supervises post-graduate research;
- Attends project, Institute or University committee meetings; and
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by the Research Fellow in the respective portfolio or the Executive Director of the Institute in the case of a Research Fellow.
