Midlands State University Tourism and Hospitality Management students recently participated at the International Management Exchange (IMEX) Future Leaders International University Challenge that was held at the Sandton Convention Centre in South Africa on the 22nd of February 2016.
Sixty students from various universities in Africa were nominated to be part of this prestigious event, after successfully submitting their events proposals for the 2017 World Teachers’ Conference. Out of those selected, a total of five students represented Zimbabwe, with all five coming from the Midlands State University (MSU).
The students, (pictured above) from MSU were accompanied for the challenge by their mentor and lecturer Mr C Njerekai, with IMEX catering for all their travel, accommodation and participation expenses.
Competing against students from some of the best universities in the region, among them, the University of South Africa and the University of Namibia, the MSU team acquitted itself well hoisting the University’s flag high and reaffirming the nation’s standing in the provision of high quality education on the continent.
And despite not landing pole position, the Team’s performance attests to the fact that Midlands State University is successfully grooming competitive students, who are able to compete both at local and regional level.
The Best Events Proposal Writing award, at this year’s challenge went to a student from the University of Namibia.
Commenting on the students’ participation, Mr Njerekai said, ‘the students were able to gain invaluable experience in proposal writing and PowerPoint presentations’. He further noted that the experience was life-changing for the students.
‘… the whole experience was awesome, life-changing and of immense value to them,’ said Mr Njerekai.
Over and above all this, the competition was an opportunity for students to develop management and leadership skills, which will benefit them in their careers as the future leaders.
