Students from the University’s Zvishavane based Faculty of Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering on the 3rd and 4th of May, 2017, visited Murowa Diamonds, Bokai Platinum Mine, Renco Mine and Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC) in Bulawayo as part of their routine study and familiarisation tours designed to help bridge the gap between theoretical and practical aspects of their curriculum.
Addressing students during their tour of Renco Mine, Mr Musanhu, the General Manager, outlined the gold mine’s operations and highlighted the important role played by mining engineers and metallurgists in the mining industry. Mr Musanhu applauded the University for incorporating industrial visits in its curriculum, noting that it was a clear demonstration of Midlands State University’s commitment to being a stakeholder-driven institution, which produces graduates that are industrially relevant.
‘… I appreciate the stance taken by Midlands State University in organising such mine visits that enable students to get a true feel of the environment they will be working in after their studies,’ said Mr Musanhu.
Commenting on the side-lines of the industrial visits, Mr E. Z. Mandaza, the Chairperson of the Department of Mining Engineering, said the visits were an integral part of students’ learning process.
As part of their tour, students had an opportunity to go underground, interact with experts and various resource persons and employees from the different mining houses as well as gain valuable insight on work practices, operational and manufacturing processes and the technologies employed in the work environment.
Speaking after their tour of various mining and manufacturing facilities, students expressed their gratitude to the University as well as their hosts, for giving them an opportunity to explore industrial realities and learn more about the world of work.
