Midlands State University’s Library Services Department hosted the prestigious Emerald Publishing workshop on Tuesday, 27 June, 2017. The workshop was held courtesy of the department’s partnership with the global publishing company with the aim of providing guidance to various authors on how to get their works published.

Emerald is a global publisher founded in 1967 linking research and publishing for the benefit of society. Emerald currently manages a range of digital products, a portfolio of more than 300 journals, more than 2500 books and over 450 case studies.

Midlands State University’s Library Services Department offers Emerald resources such as Emerald 120, International Journal of Innovative Sciences, Emerald Social Sciences eBooks Frontlist, Emerald Business Management and Economics eBooks Frontlist.

Present at the event was Mr Sibu Zondi, Emerald Regional manager for the Sub Saharan region who was the Guest of Honour, MSU Librarian Ms N. P Chibanda, Acting Executive Dean for Research and Postgraduate studies Professor L. Chikoko, Director MSU Press Mr S. Mhlahlo along with various members of academic staff and students.

Mr Zondi outlined the relations that have existed between Midlands State University and Emerald from the year 2012 to date. He further explained the background of Emerald as a publisher, and went through various topics that researchers need as a guidance to getting published which includes how to target one’s work more effectively, the essentials of a research paper, what editors and reviewers actually look for and how to peer review one’s own work.

During the workshop session, various members of the University’s academic staff had an opportunity to ask questions on issues surrounding copyright.

In his final remarks, Mr Zondi applauded MSU for having been the first institution that Emerald has visited in the year 2017.

The workshop ended with a vote of thanks from the Acting Executive Dean of Research and Postgraduate studies Professor Laurine Chikoko who acknowledged Emerald Publishers for the continued support the entity has given to authors at Midlands State University over the years in ensuring that their work is published.
