05 April 2024, Gweru CBD – The Minister of Higher & Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology, Professor dr. Amon Murwira officially opened Midlands State University’s retail shop OD.
OD will serve as a storefront to sell some of the products created by MSU and other universities as part of the Education 5.0 innovation drive.
The event began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and plaque unveiling for the new outlet.
Accompanied by delegates, Professor dr. Amon Murwira toured the store selections at OD.
Inviting the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science & Technology Development, to the podium after the tour, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Professor Fanuel Tagwira described the Minister as a champion for innovation and a pragmatist.
The Permanent Secretary took the opportunity to applaud the University in heeding the Minister’s call to contribute to the industrialisation of the nation through the provision of goods and services.
Speaking during the official opening, Professor dr. Amon Murwira missed no word in underscoring that the ministry has a vision drawn from the overarching vision of the Government of Zimbabwe to give dignity to all the citizens of the country.
“A country is developed and defended through knowledge and skill.
“Every faculty must result in a technological and industrial infrastructure.
“This infrastructure that we are looking at is directly linked – in terms of its work, to the Faculty of Business Sciences, which is the retail, but behind it, is a lot of engineering and chemistry and all these people who are making the products,” underscored Professor dr. Murwira.
The Minister also applauded the Midlands State University – Vice Chancellor, Professor Victor Ngonidzashe Muzvidziwa for showing the essence of teamwork.
“I am very happy that we have animal feed products from the Chinhoyi University of Technology, the University of Zimbabwe and traditional grains straight from our factory at the Great Zimbabwe University,” Professor Murwira applauded.
The Chairperson of the Midlands State University Council, Mrs. Mabel Mwamuka thanked the Minister for his contribution to the socioeconomic development of the nation.
Accompanied by the Vice Chancellor, the Chairperson of University Council, presented gifts to the Minister and Permanent Secretary.
An electrifying performance by students from the stellar Media, Communication, Film and Theatre Arts department brought the house down with their talent and passion on full display, they showed just how the government is addressing the drug abuse scourge in the country by promoting innovation and hardwork among the youth.
The performers had the full attention of the enthralled audience, proof that the arts are a powerful way to spread important messages and foster a brighter future.
Determined to provide an unforgettable experience, the masterful Music Business and Technology department closed the momentous event with an immersive performance that had the entire audience hanging on every note in rapt attention, leaving all present fully sated in spirit but doubly longing for more of the rich sonic feast that was on offer from such stellar talents.
The event closed with a tour of part of the projects at the University’s Innovation Hub.
