With the aim of equipping students with valuable career guidance, fostering connections between alumni and current students, Midlands State University’s Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Applied Physics and Telecommunications, in collaboration with the International and Alumni Relations Office, held a Career Pathways Alumni Network – Professional Mentorship Initiative on 17th of April 2024 at Gweru Main Campus.
The event brought together accomplished alumni and students to explore the intricacies of professional networking, discover diverse career paths and gain insights into industry trends in the field of physics.
The occasion commenced with welcome remarks by the Deputy Dean-Faculty of Science and Technology, Dr. M. Shumba, on behalf of Dr. A. Nechibvute, the Executive Dean.
Dr. Shumba stressed the significance of alumni-student networks in shaping the future of aspiring professionals.
“We believe that this mentorship program will provide our students with invaluable guidance and support as they navigate their career paths,” Dr. Shumba remarked.
Delivering his online presentation, Eng. A. Makuyana, an MSU alumnus and currently a Maintenance Supervisor at the San Remo Macaroni Company, Adelaide, South Australia, highlighted the importance of professional networking.
“Networking is not just about collecting contacts; it is about building meaningful relationships based on trust and mutual support,” iterated Eng. Makuyana.
During his presentation, Eng. J. W. Dalo, Managing Director, RMC Technology Systems (Pvt.) Limited and an MSU Physics alumnus, shared valuable insights on interview tips and professional development.
Eng. Dalo emphasised the importance of preparing for interviews and highlighted several key strategies to help students excel in the competitive job market.
“By demonstrating your knowledge and understanding of the company, you not only show your genuine interest but also position yourself as a strong candidate,” said Eng. Dalo.
Following each speaker’s presentation, an interactive question and answer session took place, allowing the students to engage with the speakers and gain further insights into their respective fields of expertise.
The students left the event inspired and equipped with a deeper understanding of the diverse career opportunities that lie ahead.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Mr. T. Dube, a Lecturer in the Department of Applied Physics and Telecommunications, thanked the organisers of the event, acknowledged the speakers for their informative presentations and students for their active participation.
The initiative laid the foundation for future collaborations between students and alumni.
