Consistent with its transformative research culture, Midlands State University’s Faculty of Science and Technology hosted a University of Cambridge scholar, Professor Andrew Wheatley, to deliver his insightful presentation on advanced materials with improved properties and diverse applications on the 17th of July 2024 at the Gweru Main Campus.
Delivering welcome remarks on behalf of the Executive Dean – Science and Technology, Chairperson of the Applied Biosciences and Biotechnology, Dr. Ruvimbo Jessy Mapaya gave an overview of the faculty highlighting its commitment to conducting cutting-edge research and establishing strategic partnerships with like-minded institutions set on driving innovation and industrialisation.
“The faculty conducts research in various areas, and fosters global partnerships and international collaborations to drive innovation and transformative research,” highlighted Dr. Mapaya.
Dr. Mapaya further indicated that owing to the faculty’s dedication to collaborative research with local and international researchers, there have been notable high-impact discoveries in areas such as nanotechnology and material sciences, bioinformatics & computational biology, drug discovery and pharmaceutical development.
Professor Wheatley shared his insightful groundbreaking research on ‘Nanoparticles, metal-organic frameworks and composites: New materials, different scales’.
As part of its efforts to drive innovation and industrialisation through high-impact research, the faculty has established strategic partnerships with top-tier universities such as the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, University of Johannesburg, University of Stuttgart and Zurich School of Crystallography.
In her vote of thanks, Ms. Sithulisiwe Ngwenya, a Research Fellow in the Pro-Vice Chancellor Research, Innovation and Industrialisation Office thanked Professor Wheatley for the insightful presentation.
