In a momentous event marking a leap towards rural industrialisation and agro-innovation, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde. Dr. E. D. Mnangagwa, graced the official commissioning of the Holy-Cross Dam in Chirumhanzu and its associated transformative projects on the 2nd of August 2024.
The President embarked on a comprehensive tour of the ambitious projects at Holy Cross, including the fisheries, a sprawling 110-hectare wheat project, and the enchanting chalet developments.
Witnessing the fruition of collaborative efforts among institutions of higher learning, guided by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development with support from the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, the President unveiled a plaque and ceremoniously cut the ribbon for the newly erected chalets.
Following the captivating tour, Hon. O. Ncube, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, extended a warm welcome to the distinguished guests, heralding a new chapter in Chirumhanzu’s growth trajectory.
Pivotal in reconstructing the dam, the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon. B. Rwodzi, emphasised the project’s significance in her address, echoing the ethos of leaving no one and no place behind in the country’s progress.
Minister Rwodzi lauded the collaboration with Midlands State University, highlighting the anticipated benefits for 800 households through the expansive 200-hectare irrigation scheme, attributing the project’s mechanisation to the University’s provision of cutting-edge farming equipment.
Professor dr. A. Murwira, Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development underscored the community-centric projects as pillars of the heritage-based Education 5.0 philosophy, emphasising the interconnectedness of community engagement, learning & teaching, research, innovation, and industrialisation.
The President and Chancellor of all state universities, Cde. Dr. Mnangagwa lauded Midlands State University’s vision for a processing plant, heralding the symbiotic relationship between universities and communities towards tangible industrial progress.
“You can see our universities working with communities and communities working with universities.
“Each university must find a niche towards industrialization which it must pursue,” he told the cheering crowds.
During the event, the MSU band enthralled the vast crowds from the constituency with their captivating tunes, leaving the attendees awe-struck and energised by the festivities.
The Vice Chancellor of Midlands State University, Professor V. N. Muzvidziwa, alongside Hon. Minister B. Rwodzi, presented a token of appreciation to President Mnangagwa, acknowledging his unwavering support and dedication to the project’s success.
The Minister of Defence, Cde. O. C. Z. Muchinguri provided the vote of thanks at the successful launch.
This rural industrialisation endeavor, aligned with the Government of Zimbabwe’s inclusive vision, aims to propel every corner of the nation towards development, resonating with the national aspirations for an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.
