GWERU, Zimbabwe – Midlands State University’s (MSU) Faculty of Law took a pioneering step into the future of legal education with its inaugural public lecture on September 6, 2024 at the University’s Gweru Main Campus.
Focusing on the intersection of legal education and artificial intelligence (AI), the public lecture drew a diverse audience of students, legal experts, and academics.
Under the theme, “Positioning Legal Education for Innovation and Technological Advancement,” the lecture aimed to encourage law schools and learners to actively shape the future of the legal field through AI integration.
Dr. A. Mugadza, Acting Executive Dean of the Faculty of Law, opened the event by highlighting its significance.
“This is not only our faculty’s inaugural lecture but also the first public discourse on positioning legal education for innovation and technological advancement,” Dr. Mugadza stated, emphasising the importance of embracing AI in the legal sector.
The guest of honour and MSU alumnus, Mr. C. Mukoyi, CEO of Topsure Incorporation and Justice Foundation, shared his experiences in transforming the legal field through technology.
Mr. Mukoyi stressed the need for Africa to actively participate in shaping the future of law through the design and implementation of AI and machine learning technologies.
Adding to the discussion, Mr. N. Maphosa, AI lecturer at Africa University, challenged law schools to go beyond merely embracing AI.
“It’s crucial to incorporate AI into the curriculum,” Maphosa urged, highlighting the need for proactive measures in legal education.
The event also saw active student engagement, with Mr. D. Simonje, Student Representative Council President, expressing gratitude for the inspiring lecture.
“This initiative by the University opens new horizons for us as future legal professionals,” Simonje remarked.
Law lecturer, Mrs. L. Mapuva concluded the event with a vote of thanks, acknowledging the collaborative effort of the Vice Chancellor, Principal Officers, support departments, and the organising committee in making the event a success.
This ground-breaking lecture marks a significant milestone in MSU’s commitment to advancing legal education.
Addressing the role of AI in law, the University is not only preparing its students for the future but also positioning itself at the forefront of legal innovation in Africa.
