Midlands State University’s Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences and the Communication Skills Centre, in collaboration with Gweru Provincial Hospital (GPH), held a two-day workshop on Interprofessional Education from the 17th to the 18th of September 2024 at Gweru Provincial Hospital.
Sponsored by the Partnership in Education Training and Research Advancement (PETRA), the workshop was geared towards capacity building of healthcare professionals through knowledge exchange for the implementation of effective communication in clinical settings.
GPH Matron, Ms. Chenai Garwe, commended Midlands State University for their efforts to empower students’ health disciplines with the requisite communication skills needed in the clinical setting.
Speaking on the project, Senior Lecturer in the department of Biochemistry, and MSU Lead Coordinator – Dissemination and Implementation Science, Dr. Victor Muleya pointed out that PETRA capacitates students and healthcare professionals in developing interprofessional communication needed in the clinical setting.
Buttressing the importance of effective communication among healthcare professionals, MSU Senior Lecturer under the department of Psychiatry and MSU Lead Coordinator – Interprofessional Education, Dr. Julia Mutambara highlighted that, “effective communication among health professionals from diverse backgrounds creates a common language and understanding, facilitating collaboration and teamwork”.
During the workshop, participants had an opportunity to engage in role-play exercises to demonstrate the pivotal role played by effective communication in improving patient care and treatment.
Executive Dean – Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dr. Reginald Matchaba-Hove, encouraged participants to implement effective communication for the benefit of the patient.
