HARARE, Zimbabwe – Midlands State University (MSU) secured top honours in three categories at the Presidential Innovation Fair held on September 18, 2024, showcasing the institution’s commitment to innovation and academic excellence.
The fair, themed “Innovation for attainment of Vision 2030,” saw MSU innovators recognised for their contributions in health, arts and humanities, and early career innovation.
Professor Mugumbate – Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Industrialisation claimed third place in the Health category for drug discovery research.
Mr. Almon Moyo from the Faculty of Social Sciences took first place in Arts and Humanities for the Deze self-resonating mbira.
The university secured third place in the Young/Early Career Innovator category for manufacturing water treatment chemicals.
“It’s time for the country to see more ‘made in Zimbabwe’ products through innovations from universities,” said the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde. Dr. E. D. Mnangagwa, who toured the exhibition stands, including MSU’s National Pathology Research and Diagnostic Centre.
The event, hosted by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, highlighted the government’s focus on fostering innovation in higher education.
Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology – Professor dr. Amon Murwira emphasised the importance of the Education 5.0 blueprint, stating, “This initiative aims to bring dignity to Zimbabweans through the production of goods and services”.
MSU’s Innovation Hub, part of the University Research and Innovation Division, attracted significant attention with its display of incubated innovations.
The University’s OD Stores and MSU Enterprises also featured prominently in the “One Stop Shop” showcasing products from higher learning institutions.
As Zimbabwe progresses towards its Vision 2030 goals, MSU’s success at the Presidential Innovation Fair underscores the University’s growing role in driving the nation’s technological and economic advancement.
