Committed to promoting a healthy learning and working environment for all, Midlands State University joined the World Mental Health Day commemorations  on the 10th of  October 2024, to raise awareness on mental health issues across all the University’s campuses.

Organised by the MSU Student Affairs Division’s Counseling Services Department, the commemorations were centred around the theme, “It’s the Time to Prioritise Mental Health in the Workplace.”

An exhilarating guided march opened the day giving it rhythm and momentum, uniting students and staff as they infused the atmosphere with enthusiasm and energy.

Demonstrating the therapeutic power of music, students from the MSU Music Business Musicology and Technology department delivered captivating performances with their marimba, drums, and shakers/hosho, effectively uplifting the mood of the audience as they marched.

During the march, the MSU Counselling Coordinator, Mrs. E. Mabika, delivered an educative and thought-provoking presentation on the significance of mental health, complemented by insightful contributions from the SRC President and the Peer Counselors President, who shared their perspectives on the matter.

After the engaging presentations, the attendees enthusiastically marched to the MSU Great Hall, filling the air with a palpable sense of unity and purpose as students and staff members came together to continue the ceremony and advance their shared goal of promoting mental health awareness and support.

The Executive Dean – Student Affairs, Ms. F Chakauya, welcomed the audience before Tendai from Friendship Bench delivered an insightful presentation on youth mental health issues, which was further complemented by a powerful message from Mrs. E. Mabika, with the common clarion call, “Be your brother’s keeper”.

The main highlight of the event was the keynote address delivered by Mr. R. Nyuke, a renowned expert in Applied Psychology who underscored the importance of mental well-being for academic and professional success, calling everyone to be proactive in curbing mental health challenges.

“Every member of the university, from students to senior management, has a role to play in fostering a mentally healthy academic environment,” said Mr. Nyuke.

As the world continues to grapple with mental-related challenges, MSU’s participation in the commemorations is evidence of its unwavering commitment to mental wellness for the enrichment of the educational experience by cultivating a supportive community where students and staff members are empowered to engage in open conversations about mental health.
