Harare, Zimbabwe – President Emmerson Mnangagwa commended Midlands State University (MSU) for its groundbreaking research and innovation at the 13th Zimbabwe International Research Symposium, held from October 14-15, 2024, at the Harare International Conference Centre.

The symposium, organised by the Research Council of Zimbabwe in partnership with the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority, showcased cutting-edge innovations under the theme “Embracing Research and Innovation for Sustainable Development.”

In his opening address, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde. Dr. E. D. Mnangagwa highlighted MSU’s collaborative efforts with Botswana International University of Science and Technology, praising their development of nano-engineered mineral froth flotation reagents.

“These innovations have significantly enhanced mine operations, benefiting both industries and communities,” the President remarked.

“Such collaborative research projects exemplify our nation’s commitment to sustainable industrialisation through research, innovation, and the application of cutting-edge technologies,” underscored the President.

The MSU stand, featuring displays from its National Pathology, Research and Diagnostics Centre and Research and Innovation Division, drew considerable attention from symposium attendees.

The university’s showcase demonstrated its pivotal role in advancing Zimbabwe’s the knowledge economy, aligning with the country’s Vision 2030 goals.

This year’s symposium marked a triumphant return after a five-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It brought together international guests and researchers, providing a platform for knowledge exchange and the presentation of diverse innovations.

President Mnangagwa emphasised the importance of a shared purpose in creating an equitable, just, sustainable, and prosperous future for all Zimbabweans.

The success of MSU’s participation in the symposium underscores the university’s growing influence in national development in keeping with the pillars of the Education 5.0 blueprint and and its alignment with Zimbabwe’s broader economic and technological aspirations.

As the country continues its march towards Vision 2030, MSU is poised to play an increasingly crucial role in human capital development and innovation.
