Johannes Hungwe, a promising researcher from the Department of Chemical Sciences at Midlands State University (MSU), has been awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry Poster Prize at the Pan Africa Chemistry Network Congress 2024.
Hungwe’s innovative research, titled “Tuning the Topology of a 2D Metal-Organic Framework from 2D to 3D Using Modulator Assisted Synthesis,” showcased remarkable scientific prowess.
His work involved synthesising two novel metal-organic frameworks demonstrated exceptional stability after guest removal, highlighting potential applications in catalysis, gas storage, and environmental remediation.
Held from October 29th to 31st, 2024, the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Pan Africa Chemistry Network Congress brought together leading scientists from across the continent.
The event underscored the growing significance of African research in the global scientific community.
“Presenting my research at the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Pan Africa Chemistry Conference was already a tremendous honour.
“It validated not just my work but also reinforced the importance of our growing chemical sciences community in Africa,” Hungwe stated.
Hungwe credited his success to the guidance of Professor Gift Mehlana, Acting Executive Director of Research and Innovation at Midlands State University.
Professor Mehlana, an African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence (ARISE) Fellow and Future Leaders — African Independent Research (FLAIR) Fellow, provided crucial knowledge and skill development opportunities.
The award symbolises the potential of African researchers to contribute meaningfully to global scientific advancement.
