The exceptional duo of Prince Tinokunda Mafigu and Ruth Fadzai Jokonya, under the expert guidance of their coach Claudios Makwara, successfully defended their global title at the UN Palais des Nations on Friday, 17 July 2026.
This back-to-back victory cements the institution’s position as a powerhouse of legal education, matching their historic triumph in the 2025 edition of the tournament.
The achievement marks only the fourth time an African university has secured the world title, showcasing the continent’s rising dominance in international advocacy.
Prior to MSU’s consecutive wins in 2025 and 2026, Kenya’s Strathmore University held the distinction with back-to-back victories in 2020 and 2021.
Ironically, history repeated itself in the final round as the brilliant MSU advocates outshone their fierce continental rivals, Strathmore University, who finished as the worthy runners-up.
The grueling road to Swiss glory began with 122 hopeful teams from across the globe applying to test their legal minds on the world stage.
Following a rigorous written evaluation, only 50 elite institutions qualified to advance to the intense virtual preliminary rounds hosted in May 2026.
From that cohort, an elite group of 24 international teams punched their tickets to Geneva for the final, high-stakes rounds of oral arguments.
Ultimately, it was the articulate and vibrant arguments presented by the Midlands State University scholars that captivated the panel of international judges, ensuring the coveted trophy returns to Zimbabwe.
