RIGA, Latvia — Midlands State University (MSU) continues to bolster its international academic profile and commitment to staff and student development through a strategic Erasmus+ mobility programme at Riga Technical University (RTU).

A delegation of seven from the Faculties of Built Environment, Art and Design and Engineering and Geosciences participated in the exchange, which included a staff mobility segment from 26 to 30 January 2026, and a full-semester student exchange running through 19 June 2026.

This initiative highlights MSU’s proactive investment in global collaboration, ensuring that both educators and learners are exposed to world-class research and cutting-edge geospatial technologies.

The delegation, which included Surveying and Geomatics Department Chairperson Mrs. R. Chivizhe and Lecturer Mr. Muromo, joined five students from their department and two from Applied Geology.

While the staff engaged in high-level academic meetings, the students began a comprehensive semester of study, gaining hands-on experience with advanced surveying tools such as drones, GPS units, and total stations.

Under the guidance of Professor Jānis Kaminskis, head of the Institute of Geomatics at RTU, the group also visited the University of Latvia’s Department of Geodesy and Geoinformatics.

There, they examined specialised instrumentation, including the Space Optical Tracking System and the Zenith Camera VESTA, providing a unique perspective on the evolution of precise vertical deflection measurements.

Beyond the classroom, the itinerary featured a National Marine Project Workshop, offering insights into how geospatial research is applied to marine spatial planning.

Supported by the MSU International and Alumni Relations Office and funded through the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme, this exchange underscores MSU’s dedication to producing globally competent graduates and fostering innovation to drive national development.
