About Us

The Department of Regional and Urban planning falls under the Faculty of Built Environment, Art and Design. The Department was established in 2023 with the mandate of delivering Education 5.0, that is, teaching, research, community service and engagement, innovation and industrialiasation. The Department of Regional and Urban Planning strives to be one of the best planning schools in the country and in the region, through training of competent Regional and Urban Planning Practitioners, conducting research which will address community and national problems and proffer solutions and innovations which will lead to the realisation of National Development Goals such as Vision 2030. The Department of Regional and Urban Planning is affiliated with the Zimbabwe Institute of Regional and Urban Planners (ZIRUP) and works in close cooperation with national and local government  departments in training of students, curriculum development, capacity building and practical research which leads to innovation and industrialisation.

  • Bachelor of Science Regional and Urban Planning Honours Degree

Admission requirements

Normal Entry: Candidates must have passed 5 Subjects at Ordinary Level, including English Language and Mathematics with at least a B Grade in Ordinary Level Mathematics. Candidates must have passed at least two subjects at Advanced Level including Geography.

Special Entry: Candidates must have a relevant Diploma in the areas of urban planning, civil engineering, land surveying, urban management, social work, local authority administration, housing development, real estate and property management, physical planning, architectural technology, land management, environmental management, plus relevant work experience of not less than 3 years.  

Discretion for exemption will be made by the department on a case-by-case basis depending on the qualifications and experience of the prospective student.

Employment opportunities exist in regional and urban planning as Town planners, Rural District Planners, Housing Experts, Urban Designers, Project Managers, Real estate development managers, Transport planners, Logistics Officers, Property and Real Estate Developer, Regional and Urban Planning Consultant, Urban planning researcher, Development planner, Public policy analyst, Lecturer or Professor in Regional and Urban Planning and The Built Environment. The programme enables planners to work in both the public and private space taking up the various roles highlighted in the above.
