1.0   PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAMME

To provide various adult education provisions and skills to adult educators to solve problems in their special fields.

2.0   ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Normal Entry

Have passed at least five (5) ‘O’ level subjects including English Language.

  1.   MODULE SYNOPSES

DAEC131 Introduction to Foundations of Adult and Continuing Education

This module introduces students to the theoretical basis of Adult and Continuing Education.  The module covers three main themes namely; philosophical, psychological and sociological influences on adult education as a field of practice. 

 

DAEC132 Research Methods in Adult and Continuing Education

This module provides the students with basic skills in identifying and stating problems in adult education as well as collecting, analysing and interpreting qualitative and quantitative data.  Emphasis in the module is an appreciation of basic research methods and research report writing skills at the appropriate level and hinged on practical, real-life adult education problems.

 

DAEC133 Guidance and Counselling in Adult Education

The modules inoculate students with an awareness of current challenges and unpleasant social environments and equip them with vital guidance and counselling skills in terms of their roles as practising counsellors as well as relevant counselling techniques they are supposed to employ.  The basic related theories underpinning counselling in institutions of teaching and learning such as Psychoanalysis, Behaviourist counselling. Humanistic counselling, Crisis counselling and Multicultural counselling are covered.

 

HCS 135 Information and Communication Technology

The module introduces adult students to Information, Communication Technologies used in education and training environments and provides them with an opportunity to explore criteria for the appropriate use of information communication technologies.

DAEC135 Environmental Management

The module is designed to train adult educators in a broad range of skills for employment in environmental management education roles, cleaner production, waste minimisation and economically sustainable development. The module includes methods of minimising, managing and reusing industrial and domestic by-products with regard to the environment and enables the graduate to advise management on its legislative duties.

DAEC136 Design and Delivery of Instruction

The module will introduce the basic concepts of design and delivery of instruction. Emphasis will be placed on analysing basic principles of design and delivery of instruction. Focus will be given to principles of adult learning.  Approaches to the delivery of instruction will also be covered including lectures, demonstrations, role play and brainstorming among others. 

DAEC137 Adult Education and the Law

This module will cover the introduction to law as applied in Zimbabwe. Emphasis will be on the law as applied in the courts. By the end of the course, the students are expected to demonstrate knowledge of the main principles and rules of law. Case law authorities will be used to illustrate how the principles involved in the law are applied to the breaches of the law. The students will be expected to apply these principles in practice.     

 

DAEC138 Entrepreneurship in Adult and Continuing Education

The module seeks to tackle social and economic challenges encountered in the 21st century.  It seeks to help adult learners embrace creativity, innovation and risk to plan and manage projects.  Having acquired entrepreneurial skills, the learners shall be equipped with the expertise to start their enterprises.

 

DAEC139 Principles and Practices of Community engagement and innovation  

 The module provides a critical interrogation of the central conceptual issues as well as an examination of how to design a programme of effective community engagement.  This module begins by asking: Why involve citizens in planning and policymaking? This leads to an examination of the politics of planning, conceptualisations of community and the tension between local and professional knowledge in policymaking.

 

DAEC141 Vocational Education and Training

The module provides an overview of Vocational Education and Training (VET).  Focus shall be given to the historical development of VET globally, in Africa and Zimbabwe.  International policy directions on VET are also covered; these include UNESCO TVET Strategy and SADC VET.  VET Curricular as well as curriculum responsiveness in the era of economic challenges and unemployment are also covered in this module.

DAEC 142 Training of Trainers

Train the trainer module seeks to impact the quality of training delivered by internal trainers and on professional development too. Some of the topics to be covered include adult learning theory, teaching/learning styles, learning space design, presentation, facilitation, aims, objectives, instructional methods, instructional media, lesson plans and evaluation.       

 

GSAE201 Gender Studies in Adult and Continuing Education

The module introduces the students to the field of gender studies, key gender studies concepts and an awareness of the influence of gender at the family level (such as on the distribution of resources) up to the public sphere shall be made.  Ways of closing gender gaps (such as the passing of policies, laws, gender empowerment and mainstreaming) shall also be studied.

 

DAEC140 Human Rights Education

The module introduces adult learners to human rights education.  The module covers aspects related to the moral basis for human rights and the universality of human rights.  It also introduces learners to approaches to facilitating human rights education in adult education contexts. Areas to be covered include democracy, civil society, separation of powers, participation, rule of law and constitutionalism.

 

DAEC 143 Research Project

Students are expected to conduct a research project in an area related to adult education under the guidance of a supervisor. The research project exposes students to the research process and learners come up with home-grown solutions to the problems.
