1.0 PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAMME
The purpose of the degree programme is to develop, in teachers, the knowledge, skills and competencies in educational leadership and management relevant to school improvement and development in a context of change that demands entrepreneurship, innovation and enterprising in line with sustainable development goals and education 5.0

14.0 MODULE SYNOPSES
BCHS131 Culture and Heritage Studies
The module examines the concepts of culture and heritage as they relate to unhuism/ubuntuism, innovation and industrialisation. Emphasis is placed on the values of social, historical, architectural, scientific and cultural heritage that can be capitalised for socio-economic development. The module further explores landscapes that contain cultural heritage associated with knowledge, songs, stories, art objects and human remains.
BLMD101 Schools Curriculum Competencies and Innovation
The module introduces students to the theory of curriculum. It explains the concept ‘curriculum,’ its elements, forces that shape it as well as the foundations of the curriculum. Students are exposed to the process of curriculum development, curriculum models, modalities of dissemination associated with each model, barriers to implementation, curriculum evaluation and the rationale for changing the curriculum.
BLMD102 Philosophical Perspectives in Educational Management
The module justifies the use of philosophy in educational management practices. It covers the concept of philosophy of education, branches of philosophy, classical and contemporary philosophies and comparative education among other pertinent aspects of philosophy of education. The module introduces students to the use of these philosophical perspectives as conceptual frameworks for management thought and practice in educational leadership and management.
BLMD103 Theories of Leadership and Supervision
The module deals with the concept of leadership in terms of authority, influence and power. It covers trait theories, behavioural theories like situational theory, transactional and transformational leadership theory, contemporary theories like instructional leadership, servant leadership and ethical leadership. It also covers leadership roles, supervisory roles, supervision models and rating of educational personnel. The application of the theories and roles in day-to-day leadership and management practice is foregrounded.
BED133 Information Communication Technology in Education
This module employs a hands-on approach to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for the innovative use of information communication technology to enhance classroom teaching and learning. Topics include the role of ICT in education, software application in education, multimedia learning, the internet of things and emerging technologies and their application in classroom teaching.
BLMD104 Organisational Theory
The module introduces students to theories that have and continue to explain and predict how groups and individuals behave in varying organisational structures, cultures and circumstances. Some of the topics covered include organisational theories, implications and groups.
BLMD105 Organisational Development
The module introduces students to a critical and science-based process that helps educational organisations build capacity to change and achieve greater effectiveness by developing, improving, and reinforcing strategies, structures, interventions and processes. Students are also introduced to OD theories, characteristics, activities and stages. The OD students should understand the relevance of the Global OD Competence Framework (Global ODCF) and the need to differentiate competencies for OD practitioners in the operating environment.
BED 131 Research Methods and Statistics
The module introduces students to the basic principles of research. It develops the students’ knowledge and skills in the following areas: identification of research problems in education; selection of appropriate research designs and data collection tools; data analysis techniques; research findings and conclusions; and research report writing. The module also introduces students to educational research that is aligned with sustainable development issues such as environmental conservation and poverty eradication.
BLMD106 Educational Planning for Development
The module introduces students to philosophical considerations of important factors for national development. Students are exposed to the relationship between politics, educational planning and the provision of education, and the social and economic factors to be considered in educational planning and development. It covers topics like national educational planning goals, educational planning models and quantitative techniques in educational planning.
BED231 Assessment and Evaluation Techniques
The module covers assessment and evaluation issues in education across all subject areas. The content of the module includes analysis of the concepts of evaluation, assessment and measurement in education; contemporary ideas on how to improve assessment and evaluation in schools; test designing; analysis of test results; national examinations and grading.
BLMD107 Collective Bargaining in Education
The module covers labour relations in the Public Service, the theoretical perspective of collective bargaining, phases in collective bargaining, the legal framework of collective bargaining in Zimbabwe, Public Service Trade Unions and the political discourse in Zimbabwe, the nature of collective bargaining in the Public Service in Zimbabwe, Public Service Trade Unions and the tripartite social dialogue processes for economic recovery in Zimbabwe.
BEIE 501 Entrepreneurship and Industrialisation in Education
The module equips the students with entrepreneurial skills on how to set up and successfully operate business and production units within and outside educational environments. Students are expected to develop a conceptual framework for entrepreneurship and distinguish between wage employment, self-employment and entrepreneurship. Familiarisation with the incubation hub and the transformation of education into an industry are considered.
BLMD108 Conflict Transformation and Management in Education
The module arms students with knowledge and skills to resolve and manage conflict in educational institutions. The module exposes the educational manager to perceptions of conflict, theory on conflict, and conflict transformation management approaches to conflicts like avoiding, confrontation, collaboration, compromising, and problem solving. The ministerial statutes for example statutory 1 of 2000 and circulars that guide the conflict resolution and management process in education are critical study areas of this module.
BEFM231 School Administration and Financial Management in Education
The module introduces students to sound administration and financial management practices followed in schools and other educational institutions. It tackles the basic tenets of the nature and purpose of administration and familiarises students with skills in budgeting and budgetary control. Students are further introduced to the accounting systems in schools and the interpretation of policies and statutes that govern financial and asset management in educational institutions.
BLMD110 People Analytics and Human Capital Development in Education
The module introduces students to the role of the school head as the Human Resource Management officer within the school. The module also introduces students to theories and practices of human resources management in education. The students learn about the rationale for human resources management and development in education, human resources planning, recruitment, selection, placement and development, managing health and safety in education and performance management.
EDGS231 Gender Studies for Educators
The module exposes students to the concept of gender and its significance to education. It also exposes students to how education spaces construct gender differences and the implications of these differences on learners and staff, and how schools can close the gender gaps by studying theoretical perspectives on gender, cultural dimensions and their implications to education. It also exposes students to different empowerment frameworks and legislation.
BLMD111 Educational Management and Legal Issues
Legal issues have become pronounced in education and educational management in particular. The educational manager as a source of guidance and enlightenment on legal matters affecting education, requires an appreciation of the law, which provides the legal frameworks of institutional operations. This module introduces practising and aspiring educational managers to an understanding of the basics of the country’s constitution, international conventions, sources of educational law and legal issues related to educational management.
BLMD112 Project Management
This module propagates the spirit of entrepreneurship through projects and project management in line with Vision 2030 and Education 5.0. This module equips students with a solid foundation in project management concepts, tools and techniques for effective project management such as project identification, planning, financing, implementation, monitoring and evaluation in the context of school management and school development. General bookkeeping, project equipment, resources management and general accountability are also covered in the module.
BLMD113 Policy Studies in Education
The module familiarises students with general policy issues and educational policy in particular. Educational management students must be able to interpret and implement policies. The module covers the concept of public policy, models of policymaking, policy problems and issues, pre-independence and post-independence policies. The module also covers the policy process and its actors. Whilst policymaking is portrayed as a national issue, the role of school heads in policymaking at the school level has a special point of emphasis in this module.
BLMD114 Management and Sustainable Development in Education
The module helps students identify knowledge, issues, perspectives, skills and values central to sustainable development in each of the three components of sustainability: environment, society and economy and integrate them into the curriculum and management practice. The module makes management students aware of the measures of sustainable development namely technology, reduce, reuse, and recycle. The module addresses issues of poverty, exclusion, unemployment, climate change, conflict and humanitarian aid and Economics of Education.
BLMD115 Economics of Education
This module introduces students to the world of economics and education economics in particular. The module gives students an appreciation of the application of the theories and principles of educational economics. Some of the topics covered include education as a public and private good, economic and non-economic good, production function theory, educational demand and educational supply, opportunity costs in education and cost recovery measures.
BLMD116 Staff Development in Schools
Both classical and neo-classical organisational theorists concur on the need and value of staff development for organisational efficiency and effectiveness. Educational managers are the key drivers of staff development in schools and this module defines their roles in staff development. The module introduces staff development theories and practices in education. The module also focuses on management, partnership and Intermediate models, designing personnel development programmes and approaches to staff development.
BED232 Research Project
In this final year, two-semester module each student carries out a research project in an area of his/her choice under the guidance of a supervisor. Through the study, students are expected to apply their knowledge and skills in research in the resolution of an identified research problem, as well as show their appreciation of research as a viable process of addressing contemporary challenges and issues in education and their local environments.
