1.0   PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAMME

The programme aims to develop serving and future educational leaders and managers with requisite skills in the theory and practice of educational leadership, management and development. This will be achieved through the advancement of critical analysis, and comprehension of theoretical foundations of educational leadership and management for innovative application to modern educational development.

1.1   ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor of Education degree or approved equivalent from any recognised university; OR a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or approved equivalent from a recognised university.

3.0   CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND FURTHER EDUCATION

Graduates of the MED in Educational Leadership, Management and Development can be employed as lecturers in tertiary institutions offer consultancy and/or advisory services in a variety of government and private enterprises including NGOs and other humanitarian organisations. They can be employed as school heads, college principals, heads of departments, policy architects, training specialists, education consultants and board members in government departments, private institutions and international organisations and can also become self-employed in educational leadership, management and development entrepreneurs who can partner government in the provision of education through establishing private educational institutions and providing consultancy as trainers in educational leadership and management.

Graduates can further their education by embarking on advanced (Doctoral) study in either PhD Educational Leadership, PhD Management or PhD Development.

4.0         PROGRAMME DELIVERY

 

Teaching and Learning Methods:

The programme shall be delivered through blended learning, research, seminar presentations, group tasks and tutorials.

Assessment Methods:

 

  •         Except for the dissertation, the final assessment in each module shall be by continuous assessment and formal examinations.
  •         Continuous assessment shall constitute 40% of the final assessment.
  •         The written examination shall constitute 60% of the final assessment.
  •         To pass, a candidate should obtain at least 50% of continuous assessment and examination combined.
  •         Assessment of the dissertation shall be based on the final written research report (70%) submitted to the Department Examiners Board, and the oral defense (30%) combined.

 

5.0   LEARNING OUTCOMES

  •         Use critical thinking to evaluate and interpret evidence, and apply theories and principles of educational leadership and management;
  •         Appreciate the complexity of socio-cultural diversity and inequalities in their application of educational leadership, management and development skills in diverse educational institutions;
  •         Demonstrate effective communication skills following professional practices acceptable within education systems and stakeholders; and
  •         Apply basic research methods in educational leadership that are sensitive to participants’ and stakeholders’ humanity and developmental needs.

 

6.0   GENERAL PROVISIONS

  •         The programme consists of 13 modules each worth 18 credits plus a dissertation worth 90 credits.
  •         A student shall register for all modules offered in the three semesters.
  •         To be awarded a Master of Education Degree in Leadership, Management and Development a student shall pass all modules including dissertation, and must have attained at least 324 credits.

 

7.0   FAILURE TO SATISFY EXAMINERS

If a candidate fails all modules at the end of the first semester, he/she shall retake failed modules.

11.0           MODULE SYNOPSES

MLMD101 Advanced Theories of Leadership and Management

The module provides students with a deeper understanding and application of leadership and management theories to educational leadership, management and development by tracing the evolution of leadership theory from the Great Man/Trait Theory, Psychodynamic Leadership, Ethical Leadership, Synodic Leadership, Teacher Leadership, Distributed Leadership to contemporary theories such as Team leadership and Transformational leadership, as well as the evolution of management theory from classical to contemporary approaches and exploring their relevance to the practice of educational leadership and development.

 

MLMD102 Leadership Development and Quality Issues in Education

The module exposes students to developmental issues in the leadership scenario as portrayed by ancient theories and current best practices and approaches in leadership for the pursuance of leadership development and quality issues in education. Students further explore the rationale for quality education, issues of equity, equality and relevance in the international forum, and education traditions and associated notions of quality. Topics covered include the concept of quality, determinants of quality, quality assurance, total quality management, continuous improvement strategies and parental involvement and quality in schools.

 

MLMD103 Organisational Behaviour

This module provides a comprehensive analysis of individual and group behaviour in organisations by educational managers through the lens of Organisational behaviour theory and practices. Organisational behaviour brings a thorough understanding of how organisations can be managed more effectively and at the same time enhance the quality of education personnel work life through studying human behaviour at workplaces. Aspects to be covered include, rewarding behaviour, stress, culture, organisational structure and leadership.

 

MLMD104 Supervision, Assessment and Evaluation

The module takes students through theoretical foundations of supervision and critical analyses of practices in the supervision of education personnel. The module further exposes students to principles of testing and evaluation, the typologies, tools and techniques employed in the assessment and evaluation of teaching and learning to include continuous assessment and end-of-cycle testing/examination.

 

MED731 Advanced Research Methods and Statistics

The module develops postgraduate students’ knowledge in the following areas of educational research: the different philosophical orientations in research; research paradigms; theoretical and conceptual frameworks; research designs; data collection methods, procedures and techniques; advanced quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques; as well as discussion of findings and making conclusions. The module also introduces students to significant educational research problems whose resolution have a potential to contribute to knowledge in educational areas such as pedagogy and assessment, as well as in sustainable development issues such as health, poverty eradication, environmental awareness, etc.

MICT732 Advanced Information Communication Technology in Education

This module helps students to acquire advanced specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of ICTs in educational environments. The topics covered include Models of ICT curriculum integration, educational ICT policy development, current and emerging issues in digital learning, contemporary learning design theories and frameworks, and framing assessment within 21st century contexts, ICT in educational research, among others.

 

MLMD105 Strategic Human Resource Development in Education

The module emphasises the role of the education manager as the chief Human Resources manager in educational set-ups. It brings in a broad but intense approach to strategic and human resources functions. Key areas covered among others include aspects of strategic human resource planning, management and development that include person specification, job analysis and measurement, recruitment, selection, appointment, induction; performance appraisal; staff development and staff development approaches, and staff appraisal issues, staff rights, welfare matters, processes and conditions of service.

 

MED743 Gender Discourse in Education

The module explores fundamental perspectives in Gender Studies to address historical gender inequalities in society and Education in particular. It inculcates a critical analysis of the concept “gender,” its historical development and ideologies that perpetuate gender differences.  The module explores implications for sustainable development goals on gender, education and development.  It also explores gender inequalities in STEM as one of the pillars of development,

 

MLMD106 Policy and Legal Issues in Education

The module’s point of emphasis is that the educational manager is the custodian of educational policy, the implementer of educational policy and the interpreter and implementer of legal provisions that relate to educational organisations. As such students shall master policy and legal provisions that guide educational managers in their management work. The module focuses on policy formulation models and their application to the education, training and management scenarios. This module is based on the idea of the interaction between education and politics; political ideology, policy analysis and the philosophy of the land.

 

MLMD107 Corporate Ethics and Financial Management in Education

The module introduces corporate ethics and financial management practices followed in schools and other educational institutions. It considers basic accounting concepts and conventions, including the double entry system of recording business transactions, preparation of general-purpose financial statements, bank reconciliation statements, and skills of budgeting and budgetary control as well as accounting requirements of Treasury Instructions

 

MLMD108 Managing Change and Innovation

The module equips students with theories of change to manage change, development and innovation in schools. Key aspects to be covered include the definition of change, innovation based on the management of organisations, change processes in innovative schools, types of innovation and the change triggers from both internal and external sources, and management of decision making for the reduction of resistance in the organisation.

MLMD109 Advanced Economics of Education

The module reinforces and advances economic concepts related to educational management already learnt. The module introduces students to the nature and scope of Economics as it relates to the human, material and financial resources required for the production, distribution and consumption of education as a social service. The effects of macro –economic fundamentals such as the fiscal and monetary policy on education and development shall feature prominently along with issues of education, training and employment in the context of educational leadership and management

 

MLMD110 Programme Evaluation in Education

The module enables students to master the concepts of measurement, assessment and evaluation of educational programmes. This module exposes students to relevant theories, models and practices for evaluating educational programmes for organisational effectiveness and efficiency.

 

MLMD111 Advanced Guidance and Counselling for Educational Managers

The module exposes problems of the external environment, which often impact heavily on the education environment and give rise to a lot of social problems and challenges in educational settings. The overall thrust of this module is to equip postgraduate students with social and personal support skills, which allow them to provide much-needed guidance and counselling to the learners and educators.

MLMD112 Leading Learning in Crises Contexts

The module exposes students to historical experiences and perspectives on leading schools in times of crises or pandemics. This requires reflections on global and local pandemics or crises in terms of provisioning for learning and assessment, capacity building, challenges and strategies towards blended learning and the place of technology in educational development.

 

MLMD113 Educational Planning and Evaluation

The module intends to introduce candidates to the world of quantitative planning and evaluation techniques using planning and evaluation models in the education context. Emphasis shall be placed on the practical application of planning, mini research and evaluation techniques as they apply to educational planning programmes. Candidates shall be expected to evaluate and identify opportunities for change and innovation in educational planning. The role of the educational manager in the whole process of educational planning dominated all topics that are covered by this module.

 

MED744 Dissertation

The Dissertation is a research study carried out over two semesters by each postgraduate student under the guidance of a PhD holder or Professor. Students apply their knowledge and skills in conducting research on contemporary educational and social issues in their area of specialisation. Students are encouraged to conduct research, which has the potential to contribute to knowledge and policies in education, and in social issues such as poverty, disaster and risk management, environmental conservation, etc. Students are expected to produce and submit a dissertation that meets the standards of research work at Masters Level.
