POST A: SPORTS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT 

GYM JANITOR ( 1 POST ZVISHAVANE CAMPUS)

JOB SUMMARY 

The Sports and Recreation Swimming Gym Janitor is responsible for contributing to the Sports and recreational activities at Midlands State University.  The Sports and Recreation Gym Janitor is responsible for contributing to the Sports and recreational activities at Midlands State University. The Gym Janitor is responsible for maintaining cleanliness, hygiene, and organization of gym facilities, equipment, and surroundings, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for Midlands State University students and staff  

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

 

  • At least 3 ‘O’ level passes
  • Cleaning experience and ability to perform assigned duties
  • 1 year proven working experience as a Janitor in a University

 

REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS 

 

  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and supplies
  • Mechanical Skills, i.e. reporting and advising on matters of plumbing, electrical and mechanical faults.
  • Ability to handle equipment and machinery
  • Excellent time management skills.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and healthy environment in and around the Gym by completing various tasks (general cleaning, dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning ceiling vents, restroom cleaning, mow lawns, cut grasses, and trim shrubs or trees around the designated environment
  • Follow all health and safety regulations
  • Facility maintenance
  • Monitoring operations within gym premises and reporting any suspicious activity to appropriate personnel
  • Make reports on effectiveness of plumbing, electrical, heating, and cooling systems in a building
  • Maintain the supply and equipment needed for cleaning duties
  • Make sure that waste bins are emptied to avoid trash littering around
  • Restock or resupply restroom papers and make sure the toilet is in a good condition
  • Take good care of the environment or building to make sure that hazardous materials are removed
  • Meet with any authority in the building to make request for items needed for work
  • Take careful and safety measures in the use of chemicals which can be harmful to the body or can damage things
  • Unlock and lock building doors early in the morning and late in evening respectively.
  • Attending to any other duties as assigned

 

POST B: SPORTS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT 

 

GYM ATTENDANT  1 POST GWERU 

JOB SUMMARY 

The Sports and Recreation Gym Attendant is responsible for contributing to the Sports and recreational activities at Midlands State University the Sports and Recreation Gym Attendant is responsible for contributing to the Sports and recreational activities at Midlands State University. The Gym Attendant is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming gym environment, assisting members, and providing basic support to ensure a positive fitness experience for Midlands State University students and staff  

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least five (5) Ordinary level subjects including English.
  • A sports-related qualification is a must.
  • 1 year proven working experience in a University or Tertiary

  • Has a background of sports,
  • Is keen to learn and develop oneself
  • Has good public relations
  • Has professional conduct
  • Can work under pressure without supervision
  • Is a team player

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Enforcing Gym, Recreational Centre, safety, fitness and departmental Policies.
  • Execute emergency procedures when necessary
  • Compiling records of users and managing documentation
  • Reporting and assisting in maintenance works
  • Assisting in replacements and ordering of equipment
  • Preparation of deduction lists for staff
  • Liaising with all the relevant University Departments when need arises through the Sports Department
  • Attend to basic repairs of equipment
  • Guiding gym prospective and registered users on the following:
  1. Appropriate workout programmes
  2. Proper attire and behavior in the gym

iii. Timetables

  1. Payments-subscriptions and affiliations
  2. Health and safety
  3. Orientation of visitors and new users

vii. Maintaining order in the gymnasium

viii. Attending to any Other duties as assigned

 

POST C: SPORTS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT

 

SWIMMING LIFESAVER (1 POST) – GWERU CAMPUS 

JOB SUMMARY 

 

The Sports and Recreation Swimming Lifesaver is responsible for contributing to the Sports and recreational activities at Midlands State University. The Swimming life saver is responsible for ensuring swimmer safety, responding to emergencies, and providing lifesaving services at pools or aquatic facilities ensuring the creation of an enabling and competitive sporting environment for Midlands State University students and staff. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least five (5) Ordinary level subjects including English.
  • Lifesaving Certification.
  • A sports-related qualification will be an advantage.
  • 1 year proven working experience in a University or Tertiary Institution

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct structured swimming lessons tailored to all skill levels, including beginners, intermediate, and advanced swimmers.
  • Serve as a certified lifeguard during pool operations, ensuring the safety and well-being of all pool users.
  • Monitor pool activities vigilantly to prevent accidents and respond swiftly to emergencies, including performing lifesaving procedures and first aid.
  • Develop individualized training plans for swimmers aspiring to compete in university and inter-varsity competitions.
  • Inspect pool facilities daily to ensure compliance with health and safety standards, reporting issues for immediate resolution.
  • Organize and oversee swimming events, inter-departmental competitions, and recreational swimming programs.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and encouragement to swimmers, focusing on skill development and confidence building.
  • Enforce pool rules and regulations, maintaining a respectful and safe environment for all users. Conduct regular water quality checks, collaborating with maintenance teams to ensure optimal pool conditions.
  • Facilitate educational sessions on water safety, proper swimming techniques, and injury prevention.
  • Assist in scheduling pool use for different groups, including training, recreational activities, and events.
  • Collaborate with other sports staff to integrate swimming into broader fitness and wellness programs.

POST D: SPORTS OFFICER – GWERU 

JOB SUMMARY 

The Sports Officer is responsible for the campus administration of sporting activities. The Sports Officer reports to the Sports and Recreation Coordinator, and plays an integral role in the student and staff experience with regards to sport and recreation. The Sports Officer assists in maintaining liaison relationships with both internal and external stakeholders in ensuring the environment and administrative implementation of sports calendars, student recruitment and coach effectiveness.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A first Degree preferably in Sports Management/ Business Sciences or related area.
  • At least 1 (one) year of experience in a sport-related environment in a University or a tertiary institution.
  • A sports coaching qualification is an added advantage. 
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Passion for promoting physical activity and student engagement in a university or higher and tertiary institution.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reports to the Sports and Recreation Coordinator
  • Assists the Sports and Recreation Coordinator to implement the departmental plan at the respective campuses.
  • Is responsible for the administration and implementation of respective activities and coaches in accordance to the vision of the department.
  • Organizes and promotes a variety of sports activities and events for students and staff.
  • Duties include the administration of student sport recruitment, training schedules, and performance assessments for students and staff.
  • Works with student organizations, external partners to enhance sports initiatives and resources.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations during sports activities and events.
  • Monitor participation rates and gather feedback to assess program effectiveness and make improvements.
  • Utilize social media, newsletters, and events to promote sports programs and encourage student involvement.
  • Identify and recruit talented athletes
  • Develop and implement sports programs for various age groups and skill levels

 

POST E: CHAPLAINCY DEPARTMENT 

 

POST: DEPUTY CHAPLAIN X 1 POST (HARARE CAMPUS)

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

    • First Degree in Theology/Religious Studies/Education OR Counselling Studies. 
    • A Masters’ Degree in the above studies is an added advantage. 
    • A Pastoral Professional training from a reputable and recognised Theological College/Seminary and/or University. 
    • Must be an ordained, practising Minister in good standing with his/her Church.
    • Must have worked as a Chaplain in High School and/or Institution of Higher Learning for at least two (2) years. 
    • Relevant experience in counselling both youths and adults.  
    • The position requires a Pastor with an ecumenical experience, capable of working with all the denominations and Religious faiths at Midlands State University Campuses.  
    • Letters of recommendations and release from the Head of Denomination are required.
    • The successful candidate will assist the Senior Ecumenical Chaplain to provide pastoral services to meet the spiritual and social needs of Midlands State University students, staff, families and various stakeholders 
  • Providing and coordinating religious, spiritual, socio-economic activities on campus including students on employment program.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Ministering to the spiritual needs of the University Community (students, staff and families).
  • Providing individual and/or group emotional and spiritual counselling to staff, students and families, especially in times of celebration, bereavement and other life crises.
  • Acting as Public Relations Officer on behalf of the Senior Ecumenical Chaplain on issues of religious affairs to the local churches, denominations and other faith-based organisations and several university stake holders.
  • Counselling of students, staff and families facing life challenges some of which end up affecting the students’ studies.
  • Conducting funeral and memorial services for staff and students.
  • Visiting ill members of the University Community in hospitals and homes.
  • Liaising with the Pastors in local churches, Ministers Fraternal and any other relevant religious organisations and offices within and outside our campuses on matters relating to students, staff and sometimes families’ spiritual welfare.
  • Liaising with the Senior Ecumenical Chaplain in sourcing and maintaining a fund to assist students with financial challenges, including the Student Employment Program. 
  • Co-ordinating Church Services for both staff and students on University Campuses
  • Co-ordinating Campus Christian Association Evangelistic Crusade or outreach, Community Engagement Services/Compassionate Work
  • Conducting training on leadership and behaviour/change towards the creation of a better MSU student culture. 
  • He/she shall also carry out any other duties which the Vice Chancellor shall assign through the Senior Ecumenical Chaplain. 

 

COUNSELLING DEPARTMENT

 

POST F: UNIVERSITY COUNSELLOR HARARE CAMPUS X 1 POST 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in counselling or counselling psychology.
  • Master’s degree in the same field is an added advantage. 
  • At least three years’ relevant working experience.
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural setting. 
  • Registration and current practising certificate with the Allied Health Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe is a MUST

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Providing individual and or group counselling to staff and students on a range of educational, personal or any other issues.  
  • Acting as an advisor and or consultant to students on issues related to the emotional aspects of learning and to students’ welfare. 
  • Providing assistance to international students in cultural acclimatization. 
  • Providing career and soft skills advice. 
  • Providing assistance to ‘at risk students’ to help them with their study skills or other related areas, including the formation of Intervention Strategies. 
  • Organizing on-campus job seeking activities including one on one with students and group workshops. 
  • Providing free, independent and confidential advice and support to students, on all matters concerning academic and administrative rights.  
  • Representing or advocating for students in meetings or discussions with staff and committees, and guiding students through processes such as appeals, complaints or misconduct findings.  
  • Assisting students with equity and welfare issues that may be affecting their ability to study, and liaise with and refer students to appropriate departments. 
  • Managing and maintaining proper records for all the counselling sessions held for future reference and audit purposes.  
  • Organizing talks, seminars and student development programs on areas relevant to the students. 
  • Delivering talks during orientation periods

CATERING SERVICES DEPARTMENT 

POST G: COOK  1 POST (HARARE CAMPUS) 

Qualifications and Experience

  • 5 ordinary level passes including English. 
  • National Certificate in Professional Cookery.  
  • A National Diploma in professional cooking will be an added advantage.
  • At least (2) years post-qualification working experience in Catering operations.

Duties and responsibilities

  •         Prepare ingredients for the shift, wash vegetables, season meat, etc.
  • Prepare oven, utensils, and grills for the shift.
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations 
  • Handling multiple orders at one time.
  • Ensure proper storage of food and detergents.
  • Sanitize and clean workstations and utensils.
  • Maintenance of reordering stock levels.
  • Serving prepared food items at the serving point.
  • Asset management.
  • Control stock and minimise wastage.
  • Check the freshness of food before preparation.
  • Coordination and control of stock movement during and after service time 
  • Tasting prepared food before service.
  • Do all the requisitions of food and non-food items for the work station.
  •  Practice laid down handover and takeover procedures 
  • Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
