REGULATIONS FOR BACHELOR OF EDUCATION HONOURS DEGREE IN PRIMARY EDUCATION AND MANAGEMENT PRACTICES (EDU57)
Overview
PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAMME
To develop in candidates a high level of awareness and understanding of Primary school education in different socio-cultural contexts. The programme aims to produce Primary school education specialists who are versatile and who have significant specialisation in two learning areas on the primary school curriculum.
- ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Diploma in Primary Education or its equivalent from an accredited and recognised institution.
- PROGRAMME CHARACTERISTICS
Areas of Study:
Primary Education, with specialisation in two primary school teaching subjects
Specialist Focus:
The development of keen awareness in primary school educators of the need for the development of skills and values that are sensitive to sustainable development and continual educational improvement. Students specialise in the teaching of two subjects in the primary school curriculum by doing a module in each of the two subjects every semester.
Orientation:
Creating primary school educators who can apply current pedagogic thinking in their educational practice to facilitate creativity and innovation among learners.
In their 1st Semester, students will be introduced to the University Innovation Hub where they will receive talks and participate in discussions on how to develop simple ideas into productive and innovative ventures.
In their 2nd and 3rd Semesters, the students will be required to take turns to visit and work in the University Industrial Park to get a feel of productive activities and industrial work and appreciate the philosophy of industrialisation.
Students are expected to use this exposure to initiate productive ventures in their schools of practice with school pupils, fellow teachers, and where possible, with the communities around the school, culminating in school-based innovation hubs and industrial parks.

Employability:
Graduates can be employed as specialist teachers in primary schools, supervisors of education programmes, lecturers in institutions offering teacher education programmes, education inspectors, designers and developers of Primary Education curricula, consultants for educational programmes, or researchers in education, Content Developers and consultants etc.
Further Studies: Master’s and Doctoral Studies in Primary Education.

COMPULSORY MODULES
BCHS131 Culture and Heritage Studies
The module examines the concepts of culture and heritage as they relate to unhuism/ubuntuism, innovation and industrialisation. Emphasis is placed on the values of social, historical, architectural, scientific and cultural heritage that can be capitalised for socio-economic development. Exploration of landscapes that contain cultural heritage associated with knowledge, songs, stories, art objects and human remains.
BEPM101 Curriculum Theory, Innovation and Practices in Education
The module enhances students’ knowledge of the concept curriculum, curriculum planning processes and content selection and organisation. Emphasis is on Curriculum Implementation; Curriculum change, innovation and educational practices.
BEPM102 Sociological Perspectives and Emerging Issues in Education
The module acquaints students with the main schools of modern sociological perspectives and emerging issues pertaining to human relationships in families, organisations and other groups in society. The module covers issues such as socialisation, media parenting practices child abuse, child trafficking and urbanisation.
BED133 Information Communication Technology in Education
This module employs a hands-on approach to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for the innovative use of information communication technology to enhance classroom teaching and learning. Topics covered include the role of ICT in education, software application in education, multimedia learning, the internet of things and emerging technologies and their application in classroom teaching.

BEN101 Linguistics and Language Teaching
This module focuses on language situation and language policy in Zimbabwe, Language situation and teaching in Zimbabwe inguistic and extra-linguistic domains, language teaching approaches/methods.
BEN102 Literature and Criticism
The module focuses on: the definition of literature, literary genres and their characteristics, introduction to literary criticism theories and their salient features introduction to basic characteristics of selected theories (Afrocentrism, Africana-Womanism, Marxism, Feminism Psychoanalytic Formalism, and Deconstruction).
BEN103 Theories of Language Arts
The module focuses on pure linguistics (micro) theoretical linguistics (micro), applied linguistics (utility), first language acquisition: cognitivism versus behaviourism, second language learning – acquisition and learning – similarities and differences, language in social function, language levels, types and roles and competence- performance debate.

Ikhosi le ikhangelelwe ukwambulela abafundi imihlahlandlela lemicabango ehlukeneyo yokuhlaziya imibhalo. Ibala elithi umhlahlandlela kule ikhosi lizasetshenziswa njengomzamo wokuphendla indlela yokuthi ulutho lusebenza njani kusetshenziswa imicabango. Elithi imibhalo lona limele imihlobo yonke yelithiritsha yesiNdebele engalotshwanga lelotshiweyo. Imibhalo ekhangelelwe ukuhlaziywa kusetshenziswa imihlahlandlela lemicabango etshiyeneyo ngeyabafundi bebanga lemfundo yeSekhondari kusukela eviyweni lakuQala kusiya kweleSithupha. The modules focus on the history and development of the ChiShona as a written language. It traces the various stages that the language went through towards standardisation. It handles issues of orthography, diglossia, codification, grammar, lexicography and harmonisation. The student is expected to apply these to assess the extent to which ChiShona has standardised.

The module exposes the student to various theories of literature criticism and writing. These are tools that enable students to get deeper analyses of literary texts. Theories such as Marxism, Afrocentrism, Formalism, Structuralism, Feminism and others will be studied with a view to finding out their relevance in analysing the ChiShona text.

SIGN LANGUAGE
BSL203 Zimbabwean Sign Language 2
The module seeks to develop reflective schoolteachers who are able to use ZSL grammar and vocabulary with sufficient accuracy to participate effectively in most formal and informal conversations on social and work topics. Such teachers would have spontaneous elaboration, when appropriate, on all familiar topics and unfamiliar topics alike. Their vocabulary base would be broad and conversation would be fluent and shared. There is evidence of some colloquial use and cultural references. The teachers would be expected to develop very good to excellent topics. The teachers would be able to use signs, finger- spelling, numbers, and ZSL grammar with superior native-like fluency and accuracy on all conversational levels. These superior signers would use the language with complete flexibility and intuition acceptable by well-educated native speakers. The teachers would be expected to use their wide range of vocabulary to develop ZSL for specific academic purposes at the different grade levels and to use the language in sign- bilingual education programmes.
BSL204 Sign Language Interpretation 1
This module provides an introductory overview of the profession of sign language interpretation as it initiates teachers of Zimbabwean Sign Language (ZSL) on the exciting journey to becoming ZSL interpreters. To this end, the module explores the foundations, principles and practices of translation and interpretation while paying particular attention to the professional code of ethics and other professional concerns.
BSL205 Sign Language Interpretation 2
The module assists students to put into practice the theories and principles they have acquired in BSL204 Sign Language Interpretation 1. The module assists the students to identify ways in which they as academics can interpret to and from English and at least one local language with ZSL as source and target language alternatively. Students are exposed to situations of spontaneous and prepared interpretation in academic, social and legal spheres. The interpretation is grounded on emerging professionalism and professionalisation in the field. These interpreters would be superior signers who use ZSL with complete flexibility and intuition acceptable by well-educated native speakers. The interpreters would be expected to use their wide range of vocabulary to interpret for specific academic purposes at the different grade/form levels and in social or legal situations.
BSL206 Disability Activism
The module develops appreciation of disabled people’s organisations (DPOs) locally and internationally. It introduces principles and practices of activism to emancipate and empower people with disabilities as minorities. The module assists students to analyse the rationale and manner in which they as academics can lead disability activist practices in an environment that is largely oblivious to the unintended outcomes of its interventions for people with disabilities. The analysis is grounded on an emerging activist ethos that focuses on individual initiatives but is aimed at collectively protesting ableism and rethinking human rights, not only in the restricted area of education but in a democratic, extended sense for people with disabilities in society generally. The module, therefore, discusses ableism in education in Zimbabwe before analysing emergent activism in DPOs in general. Students are expected to identify oppressive practices in these specific educational or social situations for people with disabilities and engage in practical, results-oriented activism that fronts the people with disabilities themselves.
