A researcher from Midlands State University’s Faculty of Social Sciences under the department of Geography, Environmental Sustainability and Resilience Building, Mr. Oshneck Mupepi was awarded the Outstanding Oral Presentation Award in the Water, Ecosystems, and Environment sub-theme at the  25th WaterNet/WARFSA/GWPSA Symposium held in Maseru, Kingdom of Lesotho from the 30th of October to the 1st of November 2024.

Held under the theme, “Enhancing Sustainability: Upscaling Innovations and Best Practices for Integrated Catchment and Water Resources Management in Eastern and Southern Africa – Leaving No One Behind,” the event brought together experts, scholars, and practitioners from across Africa to discuss  latest developments in water and environmental research.

Titled, “Wetland Moisture and Inundation Dynamics in Tugwi, Zibagwe and Shashe Sub-catchments, Zimbabwe: Insights from 2017 to 2023,” Mr. Mupepi’s award-winning paper delved into the intricate and oft-overlooked dynamics of wetland moisture levels and flood patterns in three key sub-catchments in Zimbabwe.

The paper provides invaluable insights into the hydrological behaviour of wetlands, crucial ecosystems that play a vital role in water regulation, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience.

This award serves as a recognition of the high impact research conducted at Midlands State University.
