The Midlands State University women’s soccer team popularly known as the Jaguars have touched the ground running in the women’s premier soccer league as their mighty roar continues to be felt. The team, which joined the premier soccer league in May 2017 after conquering all tertiary institutions and demonstrating its dominance for the past two years, has won four of its first seven games, drawn one and lost only two.
In their latest derby against ZRP Harare, the Jaguars proved to be indomitable as they found the back of the net three times against the well celebrated ZRP team, giving them their third win in a row. The Jaguars’ highly skilful and talented young striker Privilege ‘Ncuncu’ Mupete gave the ZRP defence a torrid time as they failed to contain her. Mupete’s fancy footwork, coupled with some great teamwork, saw her breach the ZRP defence on several occasions and managing to find the back of net thrice, for a well-deserved hat-trick. Jaguars’ central defender, Sharon Nyasondo was the pick of the defence ensuring that her team collected maximum points. The final score was MSU 3-ZRP 1.
While other students are currently enjoying their end of semester break, it’s business as usual for the Jaguars, who are in camp, preparing for their next encounter. The team coach, Nkata, expressed confidence in the team, noting that the teams’ momentum was unlikely to be broken anytime soon. Coach Nkata also applauded his chief striker, ‘Ncuncu’ and team captain Mejesty Mpofu, for being selected for trials with the Mighty Warriors. Also commenting on the team’s performance, team manager, Patience Mutumwa expressed gratitude to the University’s administration for its continued support. Mutumwa also took the opportunity to highlight the role of sport and other outside the classroom activities in nurturing complete and well-rounded graduates, noting that the team has also managed to recruit three students to Zimbabwe’s University of first choice and is currently working with sporting academies to feed into the Jaguar’s team.
