Midlands State University recently commemorated Secretaries’ Day as part of broader efforts to acknowledge and appreciate the critical role played by secretaries in the institution’s service value chain.
The colourful event was organized by the Human Resources Department and held at Gweru Bata Club on the 4th of October, 2019. The two-pronged celebrations also sought to enhance participants’ customer service skills in order for them to serve University clients better. Participants were drawn from both teaching and non-teaching departments across the entire University including members from the Zvishavane and Harare campuses as well as the Bulawayo Learning Centre. Topics covered during the training session included professional conduct as well as grooming and etiquette.
In his presentation, Edgars Stores Gweru Branch Manager, Mr Mondi Hlongwane emphasized the need for secretaries to have a broad knowledge and a keen sense of style that would enable them to dress appropriately and for success, no matter the occasion.
‘What one wears defines his/her character and it is important to know what to wear and what not to wear for certain events or even for the office; that way one gets to safeguard his/her integrity and in a way earn yourself some respect,’ he said.
Mrs Ray Leonara Wasara, a seasoned secretary, delivered a presentation on professional conduct in the workplace.
‘In order to love what you do, use what I have termed ‘Quad it’ that is being in it, knowing it, being it and doing it, ‘it’ referring to your work”, she said.
On a lighter note, participants had an opportunity to showcase their arsenal of dance moves as well as interact and network with their peers outside the usual workplace environment.
The Secretaries Day is an annual event held on the first Saturday of the month of September to appreciate and recognize the role of secretaries in the success of any organization. This year`s commemorations were held under the theme, “Solutions lie with us.”
