SHORT COURSE IN HUMANITARIAN EMERGENCIES (HE) AND DISASTER MANAGEMENT OPERATIONS (DMO)

Rationale for the Course: The course is necessitated by the increased frequency, duration and intensity of both natural and man-made disasters such climate induced floods and cyclones, terrorist activities, civil war, armed conflicts as well as the sporadic outburst of xenophobic violence in South Africa. This has created a pressing need for competently trained workforce of humanitarian professionals who are ready to respond. The course therefore, aims at enhancing the knowledge of students on the foundations and principles of humanitarian assistance. It will also enhance the leadership and management skills for professionals working with populations in need of humanitarian assistance, particularly international refugees and displaced populations.
Course content: Introduction to humanitarian emergencies:: International Humanitarian Law, Humanitarian principles and Ethics::Coordinating Humanitarian assistance and Protection::Safety and security in HE::Humanitarian Needs Assessment:: Disasters, Disaster Preparedness, management and resilience::Resource Mobilisation and Management in HE::Gender Issues in Humanitarian Situations::Public health Issues in HE::Psycho-Social Support in Humanitarian emergencies::The Media and Communication in Humanitarian emergencies::Human Rights Issues in Humanitarian Emergencies

Entry Requirements: The course is open to anyone with 5 Ordinary level passes
Course Duration: 12 weeks
Class Hours: Every Saturday, 9am-12 mid-day
