Gweru, Zimbabwe – 24 June 2025 – In a significant step toward expanding access to higher education, Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe and Midlands State University (MSU) have launched a pioneering undergraduate scholarship programme designed to support financially disadvantaged Zimbabwean students.
The partnership was formalised at a signing ceremony held at MSU’s Gweru Main Campus, where it was announced that five students will benefit from full tuition coverage and personal laptops from August 2025 until the completion of their studies in 2029.
The programme will be publicly advertised in national media, with eligibility restricted to underprivileged Zimbabwean nationals—whether by birth or residency.
In line with efforts to promote gender equity, three female and two male students will be selected based on MSU’s enrolment and academic criteria.
Each scholarship recipient will retain ownership of their provided laptop, ensuring long-term support for their digital learning needs.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Gift Manyatera, MSU Pro-Vice Chancellor for Infrastructure and Campus Development, hailed the initiative as a milestone in the University’s 25th -anniversary celebrations:
“This scholarship programme is a powerful gesture—especially during our 25th anniversary celebrations.
“It’s a befitting initiative that speaks directly to our mission of serving and uplifting disadvantaged students,” said Dr. Manyatera.
Ms. Tariro Memo, Head of Brand and Marketing at Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe, emphasised the bank’s commitment to sustainable development through education:
“This partnership is more than just a scholarship—it’s a strategic investment in Zimbabwe’s future.” Underscored Ms. Memo.
She highlighted Stanbic’s existing educational initiatives, including a similar scholarship programme at Africa University, as evidence of the bank’s belief in the transformative power of education.
The scholarship will be overseen by a dedicated management committee to ensure transparency, fairness, and alignment with the values of both institutions.
This transformative scholarship programme directly advances SDG 4 (Quality Education) and aligns with Africa’s Agenda 2063 by breaking financial barriers to learning and empowering Zimbabwean youth as catalysts for inclusive, sustainable development.
The agreement will take effect on 3 July 2025, marking the beginning of what both parties anticipate will be a long-term and impactful collaboration.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to monitor national press and official MSU communication channels for further details on eligibility and submission requirements.
