1.0 PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAMME

To prepare pre-service teachers to teach 2 subjects (Economics, Accounting, Business Studies, Physical Education, Sport and Mass Displays) up to ‘A ’Level and produce highly qualified personnel for educational institutions, government departments and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

2.0 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Normal Entry: To be admitted, an applicant should have passed two ‘A’ levels in any two of the following subject areas: Accounting; Business Studies; Economics; Physical Education, Sport and Mass Displays, or equivalent. In addition, the applicant should have passed 5 ‘O’ Levels that should include English Language and Mathematics. Equivalent qualifications from other institutions will be considered.

Specialist Focus: Training Commerce and Entrepreneurial Studies Education Teachers

Orientation: Analysis of economic problems and designing strategies to address the problems. Development of entrepreneurial and management skills.

BED132 Psychological Perspectives and Issues in Primary Education

The module explores philosophical, psychological and sociological theoretical perspectives and their application to education. Students are exposed to aspects of the module which include the intellectual, emotional, social, physical and moral development of learners in different environments. Contextual learning and critical engagement of ideas are core to this module.

BED133 Educational Technology and Innovation

This module seeks to equip students with skills for improving learning and teaching through the use of various instructional media that include audio-visual communication. The module will also familiarise students with different computer software including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, PowerPoint and Publisher.

BED144 School Curriculum and Innovation

Schools’ curriculum development is guided by basic curriculum models, as well as modalities of dissemination associated with each model. Barriers to implementation, curriculum evaluation, and the rationale for changing the curriculum are considered. This module introduces students to the theory of curriculum. It explains the concept of “curriculum,” its elements, the forces that shape it as well as the basic foundations of the curriculum. Students are exposed to the process.

BCHS131Culture and Heritage studies

This module introduces scholars to the definition terms of culture and heritage. The module exposes the learners to issues like civic education, spirituality, tangible and nontangible Zimbabwean resources. History of Zimbabwe and its different ethnic groupings in different geographical locations. Learners are challenged to be tolerant and enjoy the multicultural status of the nation.

BEIE501 Entrepreneurship and Financial Management

The module gives basics on how business is managed from a small scale to a high scale. The module exposes the learners to various business models and financial management systems that can be used to start and sustain business projects. Marketing strategies also form part of this module.

EDGS231 Gender Studies for Educators

The module empowers the students with knowledge and skills that enable them to be gender sensitive in the university, workplace, and in all their social interactions. Topics covered include Understanding Gender, Theories of Gender Inequalities, Historical Development of Gender, Gender Analysis, and Gender Issues in society, Redressing Gender Imbalances, Empowerment and Strategies for creating a gender responsive environment. Every student has to pass the module to graduate.

BED231 Assessment and Evaluation Techniques

The module covers assessment and evaluation issues in education across all subject areas. The content of the module includes analysis of the concepts evaluation, assessment and measurement in education, contemporary ideas on how to improve assessment and evaluation in schools, test designing, analysis of test results, national examinations and grading.

BED131 Research Methods and Statistics

The module introduces the learners to the basic principles of research. Qualitative and quantitative approaches to research will be used. A mixed methods research approach shall be introduced in this module. Research instruments shall be explored to give the learners an appreciation of these instruments.

BED232 Research Project

In the final year of their studies, students carry out research in a subject-related area. The research project enables the students to sharpen their research skills and at the same time apply the content learnt during the studies. At the end of the projects, students are expected to have acquired research skills and learnt presentation and project proposal writing skills.

BEIE501 Entrepreneurship and Industrialisation in Education    

This module equips students with the relevant knowledge to successfullyset up and operate an educational institution. Issues covered include identifying the educational needs of communities, factors to consider in deciding to set up an educational institution, legal frameworks, school rules and regulations, disciplinary procedures, staff recruitment, training and development, budgets and budgetary control and marketing the new educational ventures.

MODULE SYNOPSES

AFLD101 Basic Accounting Concepts and Principles

This module is designed to introduce the basic accounting concepts and principles as a foundation for further study. It covers the definition of terms as well as the basic steps of accounting for business transactions. The module enables students to carry out the double-entry accounting system for sole traderships and to correct book-keeping errors.

 

AFLD102 Financial Reporting

This module is designed to introduce the presentation of basic financial statements such as the income statement and the statement of financial position, for both incorporate and non-corporate businesses. It also covers year-end adjustments for the financial statements.

AFLD 305 Applied Accounting Education

The module is designed to introduce students to planning and teaching techniques. It looks at issues such as compiling the school syllabus from the national syllabus, preparing schemes of work from the school syllabus and detailed lesson plans from the scheme of work. Students are also introduced to the process of evaluating all the planned activities. They are exposed to teaching approaches in general and to approaches to teaching Accounting in particular.

 

AFLD 201 Financial Accounting for Companies

The module enables students to gain knowledge and insight into the drafting of financial statements of companies to comply with the requirements of the Companies Act, Chapter 24:03 and International Financial Reporting Standards [IFRS’s]. The module also introduces the student to different types of financial instruments and their characteristics.

 

AFLD202 Costing

This module covers basic costing concepts including the definition of cost terms and purposes including costs for inventory valuation and income determination, the behaviour of costs and the classification of costs from various perspectives. It also involves the two costing systems which are marginal (variable) costing and absorption (total) costing. The characteristics of each costing method are analysed.

 

AFLD401 Management Accounting

This module introduces the students to the concepts of management accounting as distinct from costing. It covers budgets and budgetary control, including various types of budgets and the needs for them and behavioural aspects of budgets.

The module also focuses on concepts of capital budgeting and capital investment appraisal. Specifically, it looks at the choice of different methods of assessing the viability of capital projects to further the goals of financial management.

 

 AFLD402 Audit Theory and Practice

The module introduces the student to auditing theory, which includes basic auditing concepts, approaches and generally accepted auditing standards. The module lays a foundation for more advanced studies in auditing at level four. It enables students to audit the processes of business entities.

 

AFLD403 Financial Statement Analysis

This module is designed to introduce the student teachers to concepts of financial statement analysis with a view to assessing a firm’s current strengths and weaknesses as well as its prospects. Various models of financial statement analysis shall be discussed.

 

AFLD405 Company Law and Financial Reporting

The module equips the student with a sound understanding of the effects of company law on financial reporting. By the end of the module, the student should have mastered the Companies Acts legal provisions on financial reporting. The student should also be able to understand the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange requirements in aiding financial reporting.

MODULE SYNOPSES

HUBS101 Management Principles

The module covers management thought, decision-making evolution of management, managerial functions (planning, organising, leading and controlling), delegation of duties and responsibilities, structure of organisations, leadership types and styles, theories of motivation, and management of change. It also covers managing change, organisational culture, corporate social responsibility, organisational structure and design, and strategic management.

HUBS102 Business Communication

The module focuses on types of business communication; effective written and oral forms of communication, internal and external communication, listening skills, communication process; business report writing, formal and informal reports; guidelines, functions and types of business reports;  meetings, types of meetings, resolutions,  minutes of meetings; communication for employment; oral presentations and guidelines for oral presentations. It equips students with good communication skills.             

HUBS103 Human Resource Management  

The module covers HRM functions; the traditional Personal Management and the Human Resource Management concept; human resource models and the strategic role of Human Resource Management, strategic importance of HRM, job analysis and design, human resource planning, labour laws; staff recruitment, selection, retention, promotion, demotion and termination of employment.

HUBS201 Entrepreneurship Management

The module focuses on the utilisation of resources, breaking barriers to entrepreneurship, decisions in small businesses, small business ownership, financing a small business, and sources of finance. The module also focuses on management that fosters a culture of innovation, risk management, employee empowerment, efficient capital, franchising, innovation and creativity, niche marketing, small businesses, and e-commerce.

HUBS203 Financial Accounting for Managers

The module exposes students to basic accounting for managers. Aspects covered include accounting records and double entry accounting system, accounting concepts and measurements, simple income statements and statements of financial position, budgeting, cash flow statements, use of accounting ratios to analyse and interpret financial statements, capital structure and leverage, and generally accepted accounting practice (GAAP). Students prepare financial statements for use by managers.

HUBS401 Production Management

The module covers production management strategies; goals and objectives of production management; the production management system; performance measurement and strategic role of the production management system; operations and supply management; project management; manufacturing and service processes; quality management, lean manufacturing; demand forecasting techniques; inventory control techniques; and scheduling.

HUBS202 Applied Business Studies Education

The module covers the aims of Business Studies education, theories of learning, national and school syllabuses, planning and scheming, teaching methods, use of teaching media and information communication technology; and test construction in Business Studies. It enables students to demonstrate good teaching skills.

HUBS402 Project Management

The module focuses on network analysis and project scheduling techniques, project structuring, project finance, hiring and management of personnel, control of materials, monitoring the project, budgeting, and project completion. It enables students to initiate and manage projects.

HUBS403 Applied Marketing

The module covers the marketing function, marketing mix and practices, the difference between marketing and selling concepts,  strategic marketing, consumer behaviour, types of markets, marketing information and research techniques, target marketing and segmentation, marketing communication, marketing strategies, direct marketing, personal selling advertising, sales promotion; products, services and branding, product life cycle, development of new products; pricing strategies; retailing and wholesaling and e-commerce. Module synopses

HUEC101 Applied Economics 1

The module focuses on basic economic problems, economic systems, demand and supply, market equilibrium, elasticity concepts, and the theory of the firm. It enables students to design strategies that address the basic economic problems to attain efficiency in the production and consumption of goods and services. Students shall apply elasticity concepts in production and consumption decision-making.

HUEC103 Labour Economic

The module covers demand and supply of labour, market equilibrium, Marginal Revenue Product Theory, wage determination, competitive and non-competitive labour markets, collective bargaining,minimum wage legislation and other determinants of wage,; trade unionism, unemployment and economic policies to curb unemployment, and trade-off between unemployment and inflation.

HUEC102 Applied Statistics for Economists

The module focuses on theoretical and practical approaches to decision-making and business forecasting, hypothesis testing, goodness of fit, linear regression, index numbers and time series analysis. Students shall make forecasts of production output, sales and profits given different scenarios of risk.

HUEC201 Applied Economics Education

The module covers the aims of Economics education, practical theories of learning, national and school syllabi, scheming and lesson planning, teaching methods, instructional media, ICT, and testing in Economics. Students shall be able to plan, teach and evaluate learning. Evaluation includes both formative and summative evaluation. Particular attention is paid to subject-specific pedagogical strategies.

HUEC202 Applied Economics II

The thrust of the module is on budget constraints, utility maximisation, revealed preference, technology, profit maximisation, market structures, perfect competition, monopolistic competition, monopoly, and oligopoly. Utility maximisation is analysed graphically and mathematically. Students shall analyse profit- maximisation by firms operating in different market structures found in their economy.

HUEC401 Applied Economics III

National income accounting, consumption theories, investment theory, IS-LM model, macro-dynamics, balance of payments constraints and remedies, national income determination, income distribution, the multiplier process, monetary and fiscal policy, international trade, balance of payments, and foreign exchange markets. The module enables students to analyse macroeconomic problems and design fiscal and monetary policies to address them.

HUEC402 Industrial Economics

The module focuses on how different market structures operate, the level of competition and barriers to entry, decisions made by firms and consumers, product differentiation and advertising, dominance and integration, oligopoly models, cooperation, and international trade. It enables students to analyse market structures and come out with strategies to address their inherent problems.

HUEC403 International Trade Theory and Practice

The module focuses on trade theories, free trade, trade protection, exchange rates, balance of payments, and regional co-operation and integration. It empowers students to apply trade theories and policies to improve the performance of economies in international trade. Students shall be in a position to evaluate the benefits of regional and international co-operation and integration to their economy.

HUEC404 Investment Analysis

The module focuses on financial markets, sources and uses of funds, investment risks and returns, efficiency of capital markets, valuation of securities, and investment appraisal techniques. It enables students to use various techniques to appraise investment projects and make sound investment choices which maximise stakeholders’ wealth.

MODULE SYNOPSES

HUEP101 Historical Issues of Physical Education, Sports and the Olympic Movement

This module focuses on the value of Physical Education, Sport and Mass Displays in the development of individuals and societies throughout the history of the human race. It has been and is still an important part of society in terms of economic and social development. The purpose of this introductory module is to help students appreciate the role that Physical Education and Sport have been playing in the holistic development of individuals from time immemorial.

HUEP102 Athletics Skills, Coaching and Officiating                                 

This module covers track and field events. This shall also include the theory and practical learning of both coaching and officiating; knowledge of athletics facilities; rules; planning and management of tournaments.

HUEP103 Pedagogy and Coaching: The Science for Attainment                       

This module imparts knowledge of theories and principles of training, which shall enable them to teach, guide and correct the learners expertly and confidently. Also, the students shall be taught how to interpret the syllabus and make the relevant documentation in preparation for teaching and coaching. Focus shall be on principles of training, teaching styles, methods of practice, components of fitness and other relevant documentation.

 HUEP103 Generic Games’ Skill: Theory and Practice

This module focuses on imparting students with both practical and theoretical knowledge of selected games. They should be able to demonstrate practical skills, the ability to prepare for teaching episodes or coaching sessions, play, officiate and coach the selected ball games. They shall also be educated on the various equipment and facilities, and how to prepare or adapt fields for activities. Students will also learn about the classes of selected games and their origins.

HUEP201 Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body

The module covers efficiency in coaching and teaching in Physical Education and Sports and is meant to assist students in the prevention of injuries and improvement of techniques based on their understanding of the human body, systems and structures.

HUEP202 The Art and Science of Movement in Gymnastics: Theory and Practice

The module seeks to impart skills and knowledge in choreography and formations among other related aspects and how to teach or coach mass displays in educational institutions and clubs.

HUEP202 Generic Sports Management and Organisation

The module imparts knowledge on how sport in the various categories of educational institutions is managed and organised. This knowledge will make the students contribute meaningfully to sports programmes, not only in educational institutions but also in other sectors where management skills are required since they are transferable.

HUEP203 Aquatic Skills and Outdoor Sports

The module equips students with practical and theoretical aquatic skills so that they are able to impart them to learners. The students will also be equipped with skills in life-saving which they will apply, not only during lessons but in other situations if the need arises. This module will also teach students the nature and value of outdoor sports so that they are able to plan and organise outdoor activities.

HUEP401 Nutrition and Sports Medicine  

This module focuses on common injuries in sport and their prevention and first aid. It will, thus, assist students in handling learners in the event of unfortunate occurrences of bone fractures, bleeding, muscle sprains and muscle tears. Students learn the correct diet for various purposes in sports so that they can advise athletes on the proper nutrition and related habits before, during and after physical activity. Also, students will be taught about obesity, drug-related issues like abuse of drugs, and doping and the negative consequences of illegal use of drugs in sports. This module aims at making students appreciate the role of sport as a healthy way of spending free time.

HUEP402 Biomechanics of Human Movement 

The module focuses on mechanics of movement, forces and body levers, linear motion and angular kinetics. The students shall appreciate that coaching points should be explained and justified scientifically. Students should be able to apply knowledge of biomechanics in coaching sports skills to improve efficiency and performance of the learner.

HUEP403 Testing, Measurement and Technology in Sport                   

This module focuses on the various ways of testing and measuring the performance of the learners. Performance is measured to check progress, and also to identify areas of weakness that require working on and skills development. Not only performance is measured in Sport, but also achievement and fitness. The student should be able to assess the learners and draw conclusions on the effectiveness of training programmes.

 HUEP404 Sociological and Psychological issues in sport

The module explores contemporary issues like drug abuse, match-fixing, cheating and violence to educate the students about their adverse effects on the development of sport and socio-economic development in general. Apart from the negative aspects the students shall learn about such aspects as voluntarism, gender, media and sport, Also the knowledge of Sport Psychology is quite fundamental as it enhances the teacher’s or coach’s understanding of the different behaviours shown by players before, during and after the game.
