MODULE SYNOPSES

BCHS131 Cultural and Heritage Studies

The module examines the concepts of culture and heritage as they relate to unhuism/ubuntuism, innovation and industrialisation. Emphasis is placed on the values of social, historical, architectural, scientific and cultural heritage that can be capitalised for socio-economic development. Exploration of landscapes that contain cultural heritage associated with knowledge, songs, stories, art objects and human remains.

BED133 Information Communication Technology in Education

This module employs a hands-on approach to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for the innovative use of information communication technology to enhance classroom teaching and learning. Topics covered include the role of ICT in education, software application in education, multimedia learning, the internet of things and emerging technologies and their application in classroom teaching.

BED144 Schools Curriculum Competencies and Innovation                                                                                                                                            

The module introduces students to the schools’ curriculum and basic theories of curriculum development. It explores the philosophy of the Zimbabwean competence-based curriculum and its implications for teaching. The specific competencies in the curriculum are analysed in relation to how they empower students with life-long competencies that prepare students for sustainable livelihoods inside and outside formal employment. Such competencies include but are not limited to creativity, innovation, industrialisation, and entrepreneurship.

IKSM101 Phonetics and Phonology

This module shall equip students with skills for identifying speech sounds in a studied indigenous language and the organs that articulate them. The module shall also equip students with skills for appreciating sounds in terms of their phonation and their manner and place of articulation and in terms of permissible and non-permissible linguistic sequences etc.

IKSM102 Orthography Building and Development in Zimbabwe’s Indigenous Languages

Drawing examples from the history of orthography building of anyone Zimbabwean indigenous language, this module shall equip students with know-how on building and developing a good orthography. The module shall achieve that through establishing and critiquing approaches that were used to build an orthography for the chosen language. In the process, the module cajoles students to come up with strategies for use in improving that language’s current orthography.  

IKSM103 Transcultural Studies in Theories of Literature and Criticism

This module exposes students to various theories of literature that were developed both in non-African and African cultures and histories. In doing so, the module helps students to appreciate how different cultures model different theoretical approaches to the study of literature at different historical moments. Furthermore, the nodule introduces students to the practical application of theoretical underpinnings to the study of literature in indigenous languages.

IKSM104 Contemporary trends and issues in language policy and planning

This module studies contemporary trends and topical issues in language policy making and implementation. The module shall introduce students to principles and models of language policy, language planning and policy implementation. In so doing, the module shall aid students in appreciating the centrality of language planning and policy making to innovation, industrialisation and nation building and to become participants in language matters.

BED131 Research Methods and Statistics

The module introduces students to the basic principles of research. It develops the students’ knowledge and skills in the following areas: identification of research problems in education; selection of appropriate research designs and data collection tools; data analysis techniques; research findings and conclusions; and research report writing. The module also introduces students to educational research that is aligned to sustainable development issues such as environmental conservation and poverty eradication.

 BED231 Assessment and Evaluation Techniques

The module covers assessment and evaluation issues in education across all subject areas. The content of the module includes an analysis of the concepts of evaluation, assessment and measurement in education; contemporary ideas on how to improve assessment and evaluation in schools; test designing; analysis of test results; national examinations and grading.

IKSM201 Morpho-syntactic structure of Indigenous Languages

This module introduces students to the basics of morpho-syntactic structure of indigenous languages and the different syntax mapping theories. In the process, the module shall equip learners with skills needed for identifying the morpheme and its various forms in a linguistic structure and how it builds into lexical items, phrases and sentences when Zimbabweans use language as both a means of communication and a carrier of culture.

IKSM202 Applied Indigenous Languages, Knowledge Systems, Literary and Cultural Education

This module introduces the pre-service teachers to the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching indigenous languages, knowledge systems, literature and culture. The module covers such aspects as, syllabus interpretation, scheming and planning, assessment and evaluation strategies, and methods of teaching indigenous languages, literature, heritage and cultures.

IKSM203 Multiculturalism and Developments in Speech Styles and their Social Contexts

This module shall give students knowledge of the different speech styles and registers that abound in the different ethnic cultures of Zimbabwe. It shall also give students know-how on when and how they are employed during various moments and contexts of communicative interaction. The module shall cajole students to debate the value of changes that occur in the different speech forms to multiculturalism and linguistic diversity in Zimbabwe.  

IKSM204 Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Developments in poetry and drama in Indigenous Zimbabwean Languages

This module shall help learners to appreciate the components of a good poem and a good drama and how much the creation of poems and dramas is influenced by both a people’s knowledge systems and the history that shapes those systems. Furthermore, the module shall equip students with the competencies and potentials needed in the writing and criticism of poems and plays using the principle of sitz im leben (setting in life).

EDGS231 Gender Studies for Educators

The module exposes students to the concept of gender and its significance to education. It also exposes students to how education spaces construct gender differences and the implications of these differences on learners and staff, and how schools can close the gender gap by studying theoretical perspectives on gender, cultural dimensions and their implications to education. It also exposes students to different empowerment frameworks and legislation.

BEIE501 Entrepreneurship and Industrialisation in Education

The module equips the students with entrepreneurial skills on how to set up and successfully operate business/production units within and outside educational environments. Students are expected to develop a conceptual framework for entrepreneurship and distinguish between wage employment, self-employment and entrepreneurship. Familiarisation with the incubation hub and the transformation of education into an industry are considered.

BEFM231 School Administration and Financial Management in Education

The module introduces students to sound administration and financial management practices followed in schools and other educational institutions. It tackles the basic tenets of the nature and purpose of administration and familiarises students with skills of budgeting and budgetary control. Students are further introduced to the accounting systems in schools and the interpretation of policies and statutes that govern financial and asset management in educational institutions.

BED132 Applied Educational Foundations

This module enhances students with basic philosophical, psychological and sociological theories that are central to the learning and development of children from diverse backgrounds. The module also interrogates the interconnection between educational foundations and innovation, thereby further equipping students with vibrant critical thinking skills to awaken the creative capabilities inherent in them.

IKSM205 Developments and Innovations in African Oral Literature and Philosophies of Life

This module introduces students to the different genres of oral literature that are found in indigenous Zimbabwean languages and to the philosophies of life which they exalt and spread. In so doing, the module shall help students to appreciate oral literary art forms as reservoirs and components of culture that serve as valid points of reference to Zimbabweans when they seek to embrace innovation and attain democracy, human rights and good governance.

IKSM206 Languages, dialects and linguistic diversity in Zimbabwe

This module equips students with knowledge of the relationship between language, dialect and linguistic diversity. The module further equips students with knowledge of the different dialects and sub-dialects of a single indigenous language that they will be studying. Above all, the module shall help students to appreciate languages and dialects as components of a rich tapestry of linguistic diversity which can foster innovation and industrialisation in Zimbabwe.

BED232 Research Project

In this final year, two-semester module each student carries out a research project in an area of his/her choice under the guidance of a supervisor. Through the study, students are expected to apply their knowledge and skills in research in the resolution of an identified research problem, as well as show their appreciation of research as a viable process of addressing contemporary challenges and issues in education and their local environments.

IKSM206 Contemporary Issues in Education

The module exposes students to the most current global trends like Globalisation, Millennium development goals, Gender, Human rights, and Health pandemics how they feed into Agenda 2030 and also how they affect the Zimbabwean Education system.  The thrust is to leverage current trends in promoting innovation, industrialisation and modernisation through Education 5.0.

IKSM207 The Novel in Indigenous Zimbabwean Languages, Multiculturalism and Trends in Socio-historical Developments

This module prescribes for study novels in any one of Zimbabwe’s indigenous languages. The module shall empower students with knowledge of how much the contemporary and topical trends in multiculturalism and socio-historical phenomena inform the writing and criticism of novels in indigenous languages.  The module shall also equip students with competencies and potential in the writing and criticism of novels using the sitz im leben (setting in life) approach.

IKSM208 Language, Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Sustainable Development

This module introduces students to the concepts of tourism, sustainable development, cultural heritage and management. The module shall raise students’ awareness of the importance and value of the relatedness of these concepts to innovation, industrialisation and nation and economy building.  Above all, the module shall cajole learners to come up with novel strategies for promoting the concepts for the benefit of all Zimbabweans.
