PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAMME
This programme is designed for candidates who have studied Inclusive Education and Assistive Technologies at the undergraduate level. The major goal is to develop in candidates a high level of awareness and understanding of inclusive and special needs education in diverse socio-cultural contexts. The programme aims to produce Inclusive Education specialists who are versatile.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Normal Entry
A Bachelor of Education degree in Inclusive Education and Assistive Technologies or an approved equivalent from any recognised university.

- MODULESYNOPSES
MICT732 Advanced Information Communication Technology in Education
This module helps students to acquire advanced specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of ICTs in educational environments. The topics covered include Models of ICT curriculum integration, educational ICT policy development, current and emerging issues in digital learning, contemporary learning design theories and frameworks, and framing assessment within 21st century contexts, ICT in educational research, among others.
MIEAT702 Historical Perspectives and Theories in Inclusive Education
The module covers theoretical frameworks, treaties, conventions and world declarations on inclusive education. How the theories impact on implementation and management of inclusive education programmes shall be discussed and analysed. The module also explores inclusive service models, theories, approaches and perspectives in depth.
MIEAT703 Human Rights and Inclusive Education
The module examines the rights of children living with disabilities and those from different developmental contexts such as poor socio-economic status and minority groups. Aspects covered in this module include among others theories of citizenship, global and regional conventions and national policies that enhance inclusivity in education.
MIEAT704 Inclusive Education in Diverse Socio-Cultural Contexts
The module examines socio-cultural theories relevant to Inclusive and Special Needs Education. The module also covers the quality of Life index issues in Community-based rehabilitation (CBR) and school-to-career schemes. The social and cultural relevance of the CBR matrix is analysed in relation to inclusive service provision in communities.
MED731 Advanced Research Methods and Statistics
The module seeks to develop postgraduate students’ knowledge in the following areas of educational research:
Ø the different philosophical orientations in research;
Ø research paradigms;
Ø theoretical and conceptual frameworks;
Ø research designs;
Ø data collection methodologies;
Ø advanced quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques;
Ø as well as discussion of findings and making conclusions.
The module introduces students to significant educational research problems whose resolution has the potential to contribute to knowledge in educational areas such as pedagogy and assessment, as well as in sustainable development issues such as health, poverty eradication, environmental awareness etc.
MIEAT705 Digitalisation in Inclusive Education.
The module covers digitalisation and the use of assistive devices and interventions for learners with communication difficulties. Computer-based applications for children with communication disorders, wireless communication systems for children with severe communication difficulties, Picture Exchange Communication Systems, Bliss symbolism and others shall be examined.
MIEAT705 Practicum
The module entails practical engagement in Inclusive Education aspects. Students will be equipped with the ability to undertake needs analysis and action research approaches in solving or alleviating challenges encountered by people with disabilities in the communities they serve.
MIEAT706 Disability, Gender and Health
The module examines the interface between disability, gender and health. Intervention models, opportunities and facilitators in community participation are analysed using an acceptance of diversity approach. Legal and policy issues as well as criticisms of related gender, disability and health interventions are to be examined in the national and global contexts.
FED132 Financial Management in Educational Institutions
The module introduces financial management practices followed in schools and other educational institutions across Faculty disciplines. It considers basic accounting concepts and conventions, including the double entry system of recording business transactions, preparation of general purpose financial statements, bank reconciliation statements, and skills of budgeting and budgetary control as well as accounting requirements of Treasury Instructions such as the School Services Fund, the General Purpose Fund and School Development Association Funds.
MIEAT707 Programme Design, Implementation and Evaluation
This module equips students with analytical skills to set up Inclusive Education programmes. The module covers aspects that include fundamentals of programme and project design, implementation and evaluation. Issues to do with constructing, using and assessing the theory of change, stakeholder mapping and engagement are explored.
MED733 Gender Studies in Education
The module is meant to afford the students a chance to interrogate and critically analyse issues in education as well as proffer intervention strategies to bring about gender equity and equality in society through the school system. Areas to be covered include; foundations of gender studies, gender inequality theories, gender analysis, gender issues in education, strategies and approaches for redressing gender imbalances as well as empowerment in education.
MIEAT708 Comparative Studies in Inclusive Education and Assistive Technologies
The modules examine various models of Inclusive education. The students compare the various models and in turn, use them to design ideal Inclusive Education models in their work places. Students analyse aspects like the policies, goals, approaches and support structures that Inclusive Education and Assistive Technologies are built upon.
MED744 Dissertation
The dissertation is a research study carried out over two semesters by each postgraduate student under the guidance of a supervisor. Students are expected to apply their knowledge and skills in conducting research on contemporary educational and social issues in their area of specialisation. Students are encouraged to conduct research which has the potential to contribute to knowledge and policies in education and social issues such as poverty, disaster and risk management, environmental conservation, etc. Students are expected to produce and submit a thesis that meets the standards of research work at Masters level.
