1.0 Purpose of the Programme
To prepare in-service teachers with knowledge, skills and attitudes with which to teach Physical Education and sports science up to ‘A’ level and help learners prepare for life and work.
2.0 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Normal Entry: Diploma/Certificate in Physical Education and Sports or equivalent from an accredited and recognised institution.

Module Synopses
BED133: Information Communication Technology in Education
This module employs a hands-on approach to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for the innovative use of information communication technology to enhance classroom teaching and learning. Topics covered include the role of ICT in education, software application in education, multimedia learning, the internet of things and emerging technologies and their application in classroom teaching.
BED144: Schools Curriculum Competencies and Innovation
The module introduces students to the schools’ curriculum and basic theories of curriculum development. It explores the philosophy of the Zimbabwean competence-based curriculum and its implications for teaching. The specific competencies in the curriculum are analysed in relation to how they empower students with life-long competencies that prepare students for sustainable livelihoods inside and outside formal employment. Such competencies include but are not limited to creativity, innovation, industrialisation, and entrepreneurship.
BCHS131: Cultural and Heritage Studies
The module examines the concepts of culture and heritage as they relate to unhuism/ubuntuism, innovation and industrialisation. Emphasis is placed on the values of social, historical, architectural, scientific and cultural heritage that can be capitalised on for socio-economic development. Exploration of landscapes that contain cultural heritage associated with knowledge, songs, stories, art objects and human remains.
SEPS101: Historical Issues of Physical Education, Sports and the Olympic Movement
The module focuses on the value of Physical Education, Sport Science and Management in the development of individuals and societies throughout the history of the human race. It has been and is still an important part of society in terms of economic and social development. This introductory module helps students appreciate the role that Physical Education and Sport have been playing in the holistic development of individuals from time immemorial.
SEPS102: Athletics Skills, Coaching and Officiating
This module covers track and field events. It also includes the theory and practical learning of both coaching and officiating, knowledge of athletics facilities, rules, and planning and management of tournaments. Students shall realise how coaching and officiating can be channels/avenues for business.
SEPS103: Pedagogy and Coaching: The Science for Attainment
The module embraces knowledge of theories and principles of training, which shall enable students to teach, guide and correct the learners expertly and confidently. The focus shall also be on principles of training, teaching styles, methods of practice, components of fitness and other relevant documentation which are handy for those intending to take up coaching as a hobby and as big business.
SEPS104: Generic Games’ Skill: Theory and Practice
This module enables students to demonstrate practical skills, the ability to prepare for teaching episodes or coaching sessions, play, officiate and coach the selected ball games. They shall also be educated on the various equipment and facilities, and how to prepare or adapt fields for activities.
BED131: Research Methods and Statistics
The module introduces students to the basic principles of research. It develops the students’ knowledge and skills in the following areas: identification of research problems in education; selection of appropriate research designs and data collection tools; data analysis techniques; research findings and conclusions; and research report writing. The module also introduces students to educational research that is aligned with sustainable development issues such as environmental conservation and poverty eradication.
BED231: Assessment and Evaluation Techniques
The module covers assessment and evaluation issues in education across all subject areas. The content of the module includes an analysis of the concepts of evaluation, assessment and measurement in education; contemporary ideas on how to improve assessment and evaluation in schools; test designing; analysis of test results; national examinations and grading.
SEPS105: Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body
The module covers efficiency in coaching and teaching with a special focus on assisting students in the prevention of injuries and improvement of techniques based on their understanding of the human body, systems and structures.
SEPS106: The Art and Science of Movement in Gymnastics: Theory and Practice
The module seeks to impart to students practical and theoretical knowledge of gymnastics which will enable them to appreciate its importance in enhancing both mental and physical health. It also aims at developing the students into effective teachers and instructors of gymnastics.
SEPS107: Generic Sports Management and Organisation
The module develops in students an understanding of the principles and functions in sports management which will enable them to actively take part in the management and development of sport programmes at school and in the community. The knowledge gained shall make the students contribute meaningfully to sports programmes, not only in educational institutions but also in other sectors where management skills are required for a living.
EDGS231: Gender Studies for Educators
The module exposes students to the concept of gender and its significance to education. It also exposes students to how education spaces construct gender differences and the implications of these differences on learners and staff, and how schools can close the gender gap by studying theoretical perspectives on gender, cultural dimensions and their implications to education. It also exposes students to different empowerment frameworks and legislation.
BEIE501: Entrepreneurship and Industrialisation in Education
The module equips the students with entrepreneurial skills on how to set up and successfully operate business/production units within and outside educational environments. Students are expected to develop a conceptual framework for entrepreneurship and distinguish between wage employment, self-employment and entrepreneurship. Familiarisation with the incubation hub and the transformation of education into an industry are considered.
BEFM231: School Administration and Financial Management in Education
The module introduces students to sound administration and financial management practices followed in schools and other educational institutions. It tackles the basic tenets of the nature and purpose of administration and familiarises students with skills in budgeting and budgetary control. Students are further introduced to the accounting systems in schools and the interpretation of policies and statutes that govern financial and asset management in educational institutions.
EFS131 & EFPS131 & EFPH131: Applied Educational Foundations
This module enhances students with basic philosophical, psychological and sociological theories that are central to the learning and development of children from diverse backgrounds. The module also interrogates the interconnection between educational foundations and innovation, thereby further equipping students with vibrant critical thinking skills to awaken the creative capabilities inherent in them.
SEPS201: Aquatic Skills and Outdoor Sports
The module equips students with practical and theoretical aquatic skills necessary for life saving. This module shall also consider the nature and value of outdoor sport so that students are able to plan and organise outdoor activities and train communities in disaster management techniques.
SEPS202: Nutrition and Sports Medicine
The module develops an appreciation of the value of proper nutrition and related feeding habits in sports and the therapeutic role of sports in daily life. Practical skills in handling common injuries in sport and their prevention and first aid shall be carried out. The module assists students in mastering skills of handling learners in the event of unfortunate occurrences of bone fractures; bleeding; muscle sprains and muscle tears.
SEPS203: Biomechanics of Human Movement
The module covers mechanics of movement, forces and body levers, linear motion and angular kinetics for a scientific justification of the application of knowledge of biomechanics in coaching sports skills to improve the efficiency and performance of the learners. The acquired knowledge shall enable learners to set up and manage gyms for business.
SEPS204: Testing, Measurement and Technology in Sport
The module focuses on the various ways of testing and measuring the performance of the learners to check on progress and also identify areas of weakness that require further skills development. The students shall be able to assess the learners and draw conclusions on the effectiveness of training programmes in different sporting environments.
SEPS205: Sociological and Psychological Issues in Sport
The module focuses on contemporary issues like drug abuse, match-fixing, cheating and violence to educate the students about their adverse effects on the development of sport and socio-economic development in general. Voluntarism, gender, media and sport, shall also be considered for a broader understanding of how these aspects impact upon sport in general.
BED135: Contemporary Issues in Education
The module exposes students to the most current global trends like Globalisation, Millennium development goals, Gender, Human rights, and Health pandemics, how they feed into Agenda 2030 and also how they affect the Zimbabwean Education system. The thrust is to leverage current trends in promoting innovation, industrialisation and modernisation through Education 5.0.
BED232: Research Project
In this final year, two-semester module each student carries out a research project in an area of his/her choice under the guidance of a supervisor. Through the study, students are expected to apply their knowledge and skills in research in the resolution of an identified research problem, as well as showing their appreciation of research as a viable process of addressing contemporary challenges and issues in education and their local environments.
