PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAMME
To prepare in-service teachers to teach Textile Technology and Design subjects up to ‘A’ level. To produce highly qualified personnel for educational institutions, government departments and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
2.0 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Normal Entry:
A teaching diploma with specialisation in Textiles Technology and Design.
Normally be employed as a full-time teacher in an approved school or college or doing appropriate educational work throughout the duration of the programme.

Module Synopses
BCHS131: Cultural and Heritage Studies
The module examines the concepts of culture and heritage as they relate to unhuism/ubuntuism, innovation and industrialisation. Emphasis is placed on the values of social, historical, architectural, scientific and cultural heritage that can be capitalised for socio-economic development. Exploration of landscapes that contain cultural heritage associated with knowledge, songs, stories, art objects and human remains.
BED133: Information Communication Technology in Education
This module employs a hands-on approach to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for the innovative use of information communication technology to enhance classroom teaching and learning. Topics covered include the role of ICT in education, software application in education, multimedia learning, the Internet of things and emerging technologies and their application in classroom teaching.
BED144: Schools Curriculum Competencies and Innovation
The module introduces students to the schools’ curriculum and basic theories of curriculum development. It explores the philosophy of the Zimbabwean competence-based curriculum and its implications for teaching. The specific competencies in the curriculum are analysed in relation to how they empower students with life-long competencies that prepare students for sustainable livelihoods inside and outside formal employment. Such competencies include but are not limited to creativity, innovation, industrialization, and entrepreneurship.
SETT101: Creative Art and Wardrobe Management
The module aims to develop an understanding of the holistic nature of the design process and introduce the principles of designing for Fashion. It introduces the student to the basic principles of research and design development for fashion through creative garment drawing and investigates fundamental design development for different figure types, occasions and selection and management ideas.
SETT102: Organic Chemistry for Textiles Technology development
The module aims to provide students with an understanding of the fundamental concepts of chemistry; atomic structure, periodic table of elements as well as chemical bonding. It introduces the student to fundamental principles of organic chemistry and a knowledge of the most important functional groups and their reactions that are essential in the textile industry.
SETT103: Industrial Construction Technology
The module aims at creating learners’ interest in constructing textile items in line with changing trends in the apparel industry. It focuses on the selection and application of appropriate components and trims, and basic sewing garment construction techniques. The module also involves the utilisation of specialized industrial garment construction equipment.
SETT104: Applied Pattern Development and Alterations
The module aims to provide students with an understanding of pattern creation and alteration in relation to garment and fabric types. Students have an opportunity to develop a variety of patterns in relation to size charts, select patterns in relation to fabrics, movement and comfort, as well as demonstrate technological and creative skills in designing styles for different age groups, drafting, making and altering patterns for different functions and figure types.
BED131: Research Methods and Statistics
The module introduces students to the basic principles of research. It develops the students’ knowledge and skills in the following areas: identification of research problems in education; selection of appropriate research designs and data collection tools; data analysis techniques; research findings and conclusions; and research report writing. The module also introduces students to educational research that is aligned with sustainable development issues such as environmental conservation and poverty eradication.
BED231: Assessment and Evaluation Techniques
The module covers assessment and evaluation issues in education across all subject areas. The content of the module includes an analysis of the concepts of evaluation, assessment and measurement in education; contemporary ideas on how to improve assessment and evaluation in schools; test designing; analysis of test results; national examinations and grading.
SETT105: Innovative Children’s Pattern Development
The module provides hands-on experiences in pattern creation and adaptation in relation to children’s wear. Students develop patterns in relation to size charts and consider patterns in relation to fabrics, movement and comfort. It also focuses on the selection and application of appropriate components and trims, basic sewing and construction techniques in the construction of fashionable products.
SETT106: Fibre Processing Technology and Management
This module aims to introduce fibre theory and fibre classification systems. It provides a general overview of textile industry materials such as fibres, yarns and fabrics in relation to fibre properties, processing, use and care.
SETT107: Industrial Garment Production and Management Techniques
The module seeks to develop knowledge and skills in the development of garments from conceptualizing the design through to the production of the garment. Concepts include basic market research, research analysis, development of design ideas, pattern development, user-friendly techniques, preparation of relevant production process documentation and total project evaluation Specialized industrial equipment and ICTs are used. Uses software such as C.A.D
EDGS231: Gender Studies for Educators
The module exposes students to the concept of gender and its significance to education. It also exposes students to how education spaces construct gender differences and the implications of these differences on learners and staff, and how schools can close the gender gap by studying theoretical perspectives on gender, cultural dimensions and their implications to education. It also exposes students to different empowerment frameworks and legislation.
BEFM231: School Administration and Financial Management in Education
The module introduces students to sound administration and financial management practices followed in schools and other educational institutions. It tackles the basic tenets of the nature and purpose of administration and familiarizes students with skills in budgeting and budgetary control. Students are further introduced to the accounting systems in schools and the interpretation of policies and statutes that govern financial and asset management in educational institutions.
EFS131 & EFPS131 & EFPH131: Applied Educational Foundations
This module enhances students with basic philosophical, psychological and sociological theories that are central to the learning and development of children from diverse backgrounds. The module also interrogates the interconnection between educational foundations and innovation, thereby further equipping students with vibrant critical thinking skills to awaken the creative capabilities inherent in them.
BEIE501: Entrepreneurship in Textile Technology and Design Business
This module facilitates the application of their clothing and design, and managerial skills in establishing a clothing enterprise which they can run profitably. The module draws from, and links with other modules in Textiles Technology and Design in which entrepreneurship ideas and skills are infused into documented productive enterprises.
SETT201: Creative Interior Decoration and Crafts
The module seeks to advance students’ knowledge of interior decoration skills and crafts through the construction of soft furnishings and extend this knowledge to their application and usage in interiors. Attention is paid to colour combinations and artistic effects. The use of locally available materials and waste management for sustainability are inculcated for local use and industrialisation of skills
BED135: Contemporary Issues in Education
The module exposes students to the most current global trends like globalisation, Millennium Development Goals, gender, human rights, and health pandemics and how they feed into Agenda 2030 and also how they affect the Zimbabwean Education system. The thrust is to leverage current trends in promoting innovation, industrialisation and modernisation through Education 5.0.
BED232: Research Project
In this final year, two-semester module each student carries out a research project in an area of his/her choice under the guidance of a supervisor. Through the study, students are expected to apply their knowledge and skills in research in the resolution of an identified research problem, as well as show their appreciation of research as a viable process of addressing contemporary challenges and issues in education and in their local environments.
BED136: Educational Management
The module introduces students to the basics of education management that speak to issues of sustainable development, innovation and industrialisation through effective and efficient management of school organisations. Students are familiarized with basic theories of educational management and the foundational building blocks of educational management namely, planning, organising, controlling, commanding and coordinating.
SETT202: Methods of Teaching Textiles and Textile Technology
Emphasis shall be on professional development which is diverse and involves a complex range of activities calling on the exercise of new and appropriate teaching methods, skills and organizational settings. It shall also develop knowledge and skills in the designing of reliable and valid tests, assignments and programmes.
SETT203: Clothing Retailing and Marketing Strategies
The module seeks to develop a full understanding of the merchandising and buying function of the apparel retail businesses and a thorough understanding of the role and contemporary issues facing merchandisers and buyers. It highlights the key principles and approaches beneficial for problem-solving in a merchandising context.
