About the Department

Welcome to the Department of Governance and Public Management which is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Department prides itself in being the bastion for teaching, research, innovation, community engagement and industrialisation in the fields of Governance, Public Management, Politics and International Relations. The thrust of the Department is premised on nurturing a Fourth Industrial Revolution compliant graduate with the skills to engage in incisive research, forge indelible bonds with communities and create solutions that not only resolve existing challenges but concurrently serve to diagnose and establish a democratic developmental society. The fundamental domains of the Department include inter alia, public policy analysis, strategic leadership, public service delivery, local governance, democracy, community development, diplomacy, international relations, political science, monitoring and evaluation, local government administration, policy implementation, public human capital development, politics-administrative interfaces and social development.

The Department offers taught undergraduate, course-work postgraduate and research higher degree programmes.  In this regard, the Department has various cognate and autonomous undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes that cut across domains of Public Management, Political Science, Local Governance, Administration, International Relations and Public Sector Management spectrums. Our higher degree (full research) programmes include Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) offerings. Pertinent to these academic offerings is the notion of developing a comprehensive graduate who has the astute proficiency to comprehend governance and public management issues, engage in cutting-edge scientific (and empirical) research, analyse and diagnose public problems. Ultimately, our graduates are developed for future careers in which they offer sustainable solutions to societal, public service delivery and community development challenges.

Further to the prime focal areas of the Department, is the creation and sustaining of synergies in research, innovation and industrialisation in sync with the Education 5.0 philosophy and Vision 2030. Research from the Department engages with pertinent issues that are anchored in the Public Management and Governance milieu. In fulfilling its innate obligation to the local, regional and global public sectors, the Department imparts skills on future as well as serving public sector human capital to effectively realise a discipline-informed skills development for improved governance and public management.

Regarding the modes of entry, the programmes offered by the Department are offered on the Conventional, Block-Release, Visiting School and the Harare Weekend School. The Department of Governance and Public Management is resourced with diligent academic and support staff whose work ethic is unparalleled.
