Midlands State University teams taking part in Cluster 2 of the Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association (ZUSA) games that kicked off on Friday, 31 March 2017, did the University proud after putting up a scintillating show at the start of the three day sports extravaganza.
Competing in football (men and women), basketball (men and women) and netball on the opening day of the games, Team MSU did not disappoint with the University’s teams putting up clinical performances filled with flair and accuracy.
The women’s football team got the ball rolling by dispatching a hapless National University of Science and Technology by a thumping six goals to nil in their opening match, to set the bar for their compatriots. In their second match, the free scoring ladies outclassed their counterparts from the Women’s University in Africa by a masterly seven goals to nil.
Not to be outdone, the netball team dispatched Chinhoyi University of Technology 32-9 before producing another breathtaking performance in defeating Africa University 40-1.
In the basketball, the ladies basketball team narrowly edged arch rivals Great Zimbabwe University 20-19 while their male counterparts were leading the team from Bindura University of Science Education 45-4 at the time of going to press.
The script did not quite go according to plan in the men’s football where Team MSU were held to a goaless draw by a spirited Catholic University in Zimbabwe Team. Team MSU missed two penalties during the match.
Day 2 of the ZUSA games will see the University’s rugby, golf and swimming teams take to the field and their pool respectively while matches will continue in the other disciplines.
We look forward to yet another fine, fine show on Day 2 of the ZUSA games.
